    Default Daimyo's Grandsons...

So in my current campaigne my Daimyo is 72 years old. Which makes him one of the oldest person in Sengoku Jidai.
His 4 sons are all Generals, the youngest one is in his late 20s, while the oldest is in his mid 40s (Wont stop talking about him ruling the clan one day in pre-battle speeches)
They all have a lot of children (4-6 each) and many male ones are in their adulthood.

But none of them became generals when they came to age....

Do I have to have my Daimyo die before they will "mature"? Was there something against letting your grandsons fight in your armies in real life?

I've never had it happen, but Im sure this is just how the family tree works in this game. It's very bad.

I wish we still had the one from Rome, or M2TW.

    No, of course not.

What I DO miss is having incompetent characters, though. They're all the same now...

Thats probably because there is a lack of family members. If one general was incompetent, that would mean about 1/4 of your general staff is rubbish (especialy early game). If you had a big family tree like in rome or medievall 2, that wouldnt matter much

They do acquire negative traits in Shogun 2 as well (such as "likes his food" -- -7% campaign movement -- generals get this one eventually if they stay put for too long), but not at the alarming rate they did in Rome. Rome characters were extremely susceptible to such traits as "poor farmer", "useless assessor" and the like.

That, and "Likes the ladies" or whatever it was called.

But that is it. Even the traits they do have just feel so..... Static. You can count them on one hand, which means you can easily memorize how to get all of them.

There don't appear to be random traits anymore, either. Like, a general being born insane, etc.

Yeah, you're right about that. It added quite a bit of flavour, and it was fun to see how it sometimes affected pre-battle speeches as well ("I didn't want to be here, but my mother told me I ought to make a good show of it, so..."). I also recall marrying off one of my factions daughters in Rome at the ripe old age of 12, and the groom came with the "cuckold" trait

Ah, Rome... I think that's still the best TW installment.

I would like that even better. That way it WOULD actually matter.

I miss when my characters actually had character.

May I tell you people that reaching the age of 18 doesn't mean a person has come of age in Shogun 2? I had family members coming of age at 14 years old, but also at 24 years old. Also if you find your heir incompetent you don't have to f*king kill him, you should make another more suited person heir. That way you won't lose a general.

So when the old guy finally bites it at the age of 80... his son succeeded him and one of his grandson became a general (it seems like only one son can come to age in a turn, as all three of them are in late 20s/early 30s)
The new Daimyo does immediately acquire the "impolite" trait lol and one of his brother is apparently very depressed over their father's passing.

While I do miss certain aspect of the old family tree, I have to say I really like the character building traits you get when your generals level up (and agents).

I admit, I do like the leveling up, and I wouldn't want to remove it. But I don't think they should be traits. I also HATE the fact that you can't just get retainers anymore. That was my favorite part back in the day.

You should be able to level up your generals, giving them new abilities and stats, but they should also get traits naturally, to define their character and make them less like robots. You should also not be able to choose their retainers.

Basically, they should keep it how it is, except, when you level up and pick the new stats or abilities, they should not show up as traits. There should also be just.... Far more traits to gain.

I have hope for Rome 2, though. They seem to want to make it more about the characters this time.

I wish it was possible to abdicate -- retire to make way for the next generation. In Sid Meier's Sword of the Samurai (still one of my all-time favourites), you could retire to a life as a monk once you were "old" (ages were given as "child", "youth", "young adult", "mature adult", "old" and "aged" rather than years), and this would do a great deal to compensate for the fact that you can't make generals out of grandchildren. But the best solution would be the family tree from Rome and Medieval 2 -- I have no idea why they went away from that.

lol, at the age of 80 he can still go to battle with full armor on a horse! National treasure indeed!
