Archers which fire from atop a horse.
How do I use these guys? Usually I set them on skirmish, attack a unit then leave them alone for the rest of the battle. Am I doing it wrong?

When you have lots of them, you can have them grouped and attack a specific, dangerous target and have him dead soon. Also, cantabrian circle when you play "defence". Just my type of play.

I usually use them as a skirmish line to whittle away at the enemies cavalry, then pull them back on skirmish mode when the infantry lines clash, once those are comitted then it';s cavalry management time again using both the horse archers and melee cavalry to be the 'hammer' of the anvil.
Anoth use, when appropriate is to take out the enemy siege engines once they have been left behind by their main army. (or their general if he is foolish to remain vulnerable to such a sneaky tactic (which is quite often).

I find jav cav the way to go, they cut enemy cav and infantry down in mere seconds with what would take horse archers much longer. it take alot of micro-management though

I send them to the extreme flanks and have them pass the enemy lines, keeping out of range of the enemy foot archers. Good targets are light cavalry, other missile cavalry (if you can have 2:1 or 3:1 against them), heavier cavalry - even leaders and infantry without shields. When the arrows have been fired keep them ready for taking prisoners or rear attaks on engaged units.

What Logios said...
Action behind enemy lines shooting at the back of elite units where armor is not high.

Yep, I use these troops behind enemy lines too. They can fire in the backs of the enemy quite easily. They also do a good job of separating the enemy cavalry from their infantry, so that I can destroy them piecemeal.

I like to flank the enemy with horse archers whether I'm attacking or defending, usually it messes up their formation because they will try to deal with your horse archers, then they'll just chase you and get tired while you keep massacring them with arrows.
