It's crap like this that really makes my blood boil.

Since when should the taxpayers have to foot the bill for a convict, who MURDERED his wife, to get a sex change? Why should the state have to comply with this?

This guy killed his wife, spends years in prison, and is now going to be receiving a surgery that costs thousands of dollars, free of charge.

Wherever you lean politically, I think we can all agree this guy does not deserve it. If anything, the judge that ruled it and the lawyer for Robert Kosilek should have to pay for it. His excuse is absurd. If he thinks he'd be happier as a woman, good for him, but it should not cost the state.

The judge got it right: (1) The state is obliged to provide adequate medical treatment to prisoners; (2) Gender identity disorder is real and often has very severe consequences like extreme self mutilation and suicide; (3) Gender reassignment is the only effective treatment for severe cases. If you put those three points together the ruling in this case is just an obvious application of current law.

Personally I think murderers should be hanged, but if you are going to keep them locked up instead then you have to provide medical treatment, and gender reassignment is the standard treatment for a real psychiatric illness.

Isn't a sex change operation considered a cosmetic change, instead of being health related? I don't see, how his health is going to become better by a sex change. If you claim that the change will stop him from self mutilation and suicide that could be applied to a lot of other surgical operations, which are considered pure cosmetics.

If I had received my doctor's recommendation of getting eye surgery due to my mental health (improved confidence and all that), I wouldn't object to some lowlife getting a free sex change due to the same reason... Except that this is a recognised psychological condition. Not just a matter of "improving confidence". It is defined as a mental health issue and is therefore the responsibility of whomsoever is responsible for the individual's health. Seems pretty straightforward really.

Pretty much this. The waste of money is keeping him alive, but if thats whats being done and their are rules about medical treatment, this is the logical thing to do.

This is a lesson to all of you. If you come down with a a really bad health ailment and don't have the money to afford the surgery...just murder someone and We The People will foot the bill for you. But you have to murder someone, anyone, because otherwise we aren't helping you out with and you're gonna have to pay for your own fake vag.
