Looks like a typical late roman ridge helmet but it has ear hole protectors which may have been custom.
Yes it does, but this is a soldier of the Exarch of Ravenna army from 643 AD. I thought the ridge helmet was retired by then.
Image from Osrpey guys. What do you expect?
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
This is the only roman helmet I found for the 6th century... obviously, the mod begins in the 7th but I dont know what helmets were used then. I wouldnt imagine the late roman helmets were still manufactured. I thought they moved towards the Spangenhelm.
Erm.... That is an Anglo-Saxon helm mateI believe that is the Sutton Hoo find.
The image is actually from Concord Publishing from the book "The Eastern Romans: 330 - 1453" it's actually one of my favorites. The helmet was suppose to come from a fresco in one of the churches in Ravenna. Though I don't know when it was done but I think that by the 7th century all elite guard units had spangenhelms and only lower caste troops still used old equipment from previous centuries.
Yeah it is from Sutton Hoo, I just assumed it was copied by Romans in the east because it is listed as such on this page. http://www.romancoins.info/MilitaryE...nt-Helmet.html
So roughly how many units will have the ridge helmets?
Also, will some of the Spangenhelm helmets come with different back pieces?

great work so far.
Numerus Quinta Macedonica
The Numerus Quinta Macedonica in addition to the Quartae Parthica are one of the oldest regiments in the Roman Army. Stationed in Egypt since the 3rd Century to defend Egypt, the most richest region in the Empire to counter any possibility of an enemy invasion. Like their comrades in Syria, they most likely were whipped out when Egypt fell to the Sassanians in 619.

Great stuff!
What ever happened to the Regii?
That's very interesting, I wonder what happened to them during the Persian occupation? Anyway so long as Alexandria is in roman hands these units will be recruit able to face any opponent.
The magazine is called "Ancient Warefare" it's based in holland I think. Just google it and it should pop up, there about $14 an issue.
