Default End of Antiquity Campaign: The First Crusade (612 - 710)

"Chaos rages across Romania, the great Imperium Romanorum is disintegrating upon the onslaught of the mighty Eranian Empire of Sassan to the east - of the ravaging hordes of Slavs and their ferocious overlords the Avars to the north - of the rampaging Longobards to the west - in the face of this impending doom - all Romans look to the sky and cry out to their God, "Deus, Adiuto Romanorum!" To all citizens it is clear, this is the beginning of the end! To history this time period is forever known as the beginning of the End of Antiquity!"

    -Overview-

In 610 Flavius Heraclius, the son of the Exarch of Africa, revolted against the tyrant usurper Emperor Phocas Augustus - the man who is responsible for the many calamities and misfortune placed upon the Roman world - whose regime in Constantinople had become increasingly unpopular and violent. The Great King of Eran, Khusro II, who was restored to his throne by Phocas' predecessor the noble Emperor Mauricius Tiberius, declared war upon the Roman Empire after the tyrant Phocas brutally murdered his patron and his many sons as a pretext for avenging his great friend and has penetrated deep into Roman territory by 610 AD and taking advantage of the insecurity of Heraclius' hold on power - by 612 has pushed his armies even closer, upon the great city of Antioch and the important city of Caesarea Cappadocia. For Heraclius, his only hope is to meet the armies of Persia outside the city and pray that his God is with him. Meanwhile, the Balkans have been completely ravaged and occupied by Slavs and their allies/overlords the nomadic but centralized Avar Khaganate, and have pushed the Limes of the once Danubian frontier to the very hinterlands of the Roman capital and all the way south to the Macedonian city of Thessalonica. In the west, the situation is much more desperate, ever since the Lombards came south of the Alps in the late 6th century, they have been taking advantage of the inability of Roman Emperors to defend the vast over-extended frontiers and have been carving out dukedoms all over Italy, making the Exarch of Ravenna hard pressed to maintain Roman rule throughout the empire's "homeland." Africa is by far the most stable and most secured part of the Roman world and the Exarch of Carthage will most likely do his utmost to ensure that the west and eastern parts of the Empire receive the necessary reinforcements in the face of such overwhelming odds. This is the situation facing the Roman world and it would take the greatest of emperors to ensure that the Imperium Romanorum remains standing a few more decades.

    Yeah, that looks magnificent!
To include the Chazars and the Bulgarians would be also nice.
And maybe you could also add the Kingdom of Makuria
    And it's really nearly finished?
    That would be cool.

Avar roster is more or less complete, Romans and Persians are 90% done, Lombards are next project and as for the Arabs, I do not have any info - I have not heard anything recently from Bordobere.

The map is nearly done minus the missing resources and the final placement of units, characters etc. I will give more info in future updates. As for now, dream of the possibilities of one day commanding an army of Romans, Persians, Avars or Lombards!

I could not hope to find a better mod to play, it's a trully magnificent historical period. And everything looks so nicely and well done. You are a wonderful modder, no doubt of that.

Really impressive and the good new is it's not a too big project but rather a good one that you will be able to do it with ease (especially with other modders to support you)!

Kind of, only thing is "I" prefer this time period over Justinian because it is more epic and the turning point of human history. Heraclius is my favorite emperor and his accomplishments merit a mod dedicated specifically to him.

    The Imperium Romanorum

    Faction Banners

    Units

    Candidatoi Imperatorii
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

As nothing is written regarding the close bodyguards of the emperor I have decided to make the Roman Bodyguards the same as they were in the previous centuries. Named for the 40 selected men from the Scholarii Palatinae, they are the "Candidatus" the elite of the elite whose sole responsibility is the personal protection of the imperial Domnus, his heir and his family and generals. Distinguished from other imperial units they had the special distinction of wearing solid white tunics and cloaks when going into battle and equipped like all other palatine units in more traditional "Roman" armor as depicted in the David plates.
*Horse armor texture is not the final proof.

    Scholae Clibanarii Palatinae
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

The Scholae Clibanarii Palatinae form the primary part of the Palatine Guard units and are the most senior unit in the Roman army at this time. They are the heaviest cavalry at the Emperor's disposal and are the finest horsemen that can contend with the heavy Savaran of the east. Along with the other Palatine Guard units they too are equipped with antiquated gilded scale armor from head to toe. Will be only be recruitable in Palatine Barracks in Constantinople.
*Horse armor and shield textures are not the final proof.

    Excubitores
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

The Excubitores were still the crack fighting bodyguards of the Roman Emperors in the beginning of the 7th century and it was only after the reign of Heraclius were they minimalized to a lesser role. Serving in the same role as commanded by the Emperor Leo I in the 5th century, they enjoyed the privilege of being the only real combat force of the Palatine guard units in Constantinople and only the best of the best Roman troops could try out for this elite position and thus are the Emperor's unique unit. Along with other palace units they too are equipped with a more antiquated look but are none-the-less the best heavy infantry the Empire can thrust upon its enemies. Will be only be recruitable in Palatine Barracks in Constantinople.

    Protectores Obsequim Imperatori
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Along with the Candidatoi, the Excubitores and the Scholarii Palatinae, the Protectores were also part of the Palatine Guard units in Constantinople and will act primarily as the Emperor's best spearmen. Not much is mentioned of them in primary sources other then they existed so I have taken the liberty of making them very deadly with lance and sword and will be very useful in situations that causes them to engage cavalry and infantry. Similarly equipped with old fashioned Roman arms and armor to personify the imperial glory that is Rome and to give the enemy the notion that an imperial guard unit is present on the battle field. Will be only be recruitable in Palatine Barracks in Constantinople.

    Eran-Shahr

    Faction Banners

    Pushtīghbān-Grivpānvār
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

The Pushtīghbān are the personal bodyguards of the Shah, his heir and his most capable commanders. They are the finest warriors and will fight and defend their lord to the death! Equipped with the best armor available, these men make up the flower of Eranian chivalry and are filled only with the elite of the elite of the Shah's Peshmerga.

    Gyān-Āvspar-Grivpānvār
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Known as the "Peshmerga", The Gyan Avspar are the braviest of the brave and the elite horsemen of the Eranian War Machine. Heavily armored from head to toe, they are the finest unit a Shah can put to the field and can cause extreme damage to enemy ranks and withstand many attacks as well as delivering lethal blows in return. With the spirit of the eternal goodness of Ahura-Mazdha, these elite warriors will fight till the death and not fear it.

    Zāyedān-i-Grivpānvār
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

The "Immortals" were an elite unit within the Sassanian army; they numbered at 10,000. They are possibly an orientation to the former Immortals who served the rulers of the Achaemenid Empire and it is possible that they wore the same clothing as their predecessor. These warriors bore some of the finest and pre-eminent quality weaponry and amour of the entire Sassanian army. The Zhayedan, were led by a commander bearing the title of "Varthagh-Nighan Khvadhay." Although elites, they do not have much role in the wars involving Rome, but were kept as reserves alongside the generals (Spah). When used in the field they would inflict high casualties on the enemy and where feared by Eran's enemies for their terrible charge!

    Khosrowgetae
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

"Khosrow's Own," these are the elite Savaran of the Great King Khosrou himself. One of the last units to be made in Sassanid history-armored with western style armor but with the effectiveness of Eranian skill-these are equal to the Royal Guard units in the Ctesiphon and will fight the enemies of the Shah till the death!

    Piroozetae
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

"The Victorious Ones," these are the elite Savaran of the Great King Khosrou himself. One of the last units to be made in Sassanid history-armored with western style armor but with the effectiveness of Eranian skill-these are equal to the Royal Guard units in the Ctesiphon and will fight the enemies of the Shah till the death!
