Default best difficulty for 100% autoresolved campaigns

i only fight battles very occasionally as i prefer to progress the game fairly quickly and focus on developing my cities. i've read enough threads to know that people generally consider autoresolve to be far less effective overall than fighting the battles yourselves. so i'm wondering what information and tips you guys have for maximizing the effectiveness of autoresolved battles. considering the various bonuses given at different difficulty levels, which difficulty setting do you think would be best for autoresolving? and most importantly, how does one most effectively compose & arrange their army?

well i usually autoresolve battles unless the situation gets critical. i would recommend you hard/hard or hard/medium diffuculty but make sure you dont play very hard because things get really unrealistic and even your strongest armies get crushed by ai. which is really irritating

Medium/Medium gives you "even" odds, as far as I know. Larger armies will typically defeat smaller armies, though there is a bit of RNG involved, else AI would never win Heroic Victories, which they do. Putting the difficulty higher than Medium starts to give the AI bonuses where they have a higher chance of winning an auto resolve match when two similar sized armies engage.

Hard is probably the most entertaining as with good army composition and competent general you still have to maneuver well. VH the AI has a very large auto resolve bonus and you'll always need to outnumber AI to win. Medium you'll find simply good army or good general will usually win even odds battles which makes for a bit boring campaign.

thanks for the input guys. i found that i generally crushed the AI on medium and so i've been playing on hard for a month or so now (using BGR IV with both) and while i really enjoy the increased challenge, i have had some frustrating and often ridiculous losses. of course one can always reload and/or autowin those battles but that sometimes feels a little cheap. i'll stick with hard in any case and just try to get better.

does anyone have any advice regarding how to compose an attacking army generally? i've also read that the arrangement of the unit cards in the stack is taken into account somehow. it's unfortunate that it's all so abstract.

a strange thing happened recently in my TO campaign, i had met with an expanding Portugal war machine that had been crushing the french from the south and i from the north, when our new borders finally met up and the French were crushed, they soon enough turned their sites on me, their armies were quite large and numerous consisting mainly of sword militias portugal knights and arquebrusiers. They surprise attacked a half strenght army of mine who were on their way to Caen to retrain, my army consisted or a half stack with an average silver chevron experienced bunch of professional units, few ritterbruders both mounted and dismounted, same with some Halbruders as well as some order spears and some hand gunners, the odds the enemy had gave them a 3/1 chance in their favour and i'm playing on H/H as always. I retreated firstly but were pursued and trapped and decided it let's auto-solve and get it over with. I got a clear victory.

I have tried a new campaign, playing VH/VH and I usually play auto-resolve battles. I only join the battle if the cases are critical.

In fact , it is so hard as you guys said. we must be outnumbered the enemies pretty much to win or besiege them until they surrender.

When facing the Golden Horde, I sometimes have to use 3 full stacks to hammer 1 of them

The first value (VH in the above case) relates to campaign difficulty. The other one (H) relates to real time battles difficulty.
So, unless you are planning on playing at least some real time battles, lowering their difficulty will have no effect on your campaign. It will be just as hard as before (and you said that you find it quite hard)...

In fact, I play some real battles, so VH for campaign and H for battles may be my choice finally. VH for battles is not really realistic, you know.

    Thank for your advice
