Icon5 Rome 2 Total War- Amphibious Attacks

    Greetings all,

Rome 2 Total War is right around the bend! I am new to the forums, but I have been a long time fan of the TW series. I was wondering about the new feature of amphibious assaults that will be introduced in Rome 2. Here is my question. Once you unload your troops on the beach, do you still have to control your ships and withdraw them from the battle, or does the AI take over from there? I expect answers to this question to be limited because we actually haven't seen R2TW, but any sort of info would help.

    Have and Excellent day!

That is a good question actually.

I suppose you can still control them after you unload them. They stated that you could use your navy to bombard a city (eg Carthage) with your boats. So, I suppose you will still be able to control your vessels as mobile artillery platforms after you unload them. And I definitely hope that both sides will be able to use land and sea armies so that you can have a naval battle and a land battle happening at the same time with connections between both battles in the form of landings and artillery support. It would open a new range of possibilities...

Wouldn't controlling two types of armies at once be rather difficult?

I think the ships will be the replacement for Gunpowder artillery.
Unless you have a hard time controlling those It'll be easy.

i imagine this done like the first part of the amphibious battle just purely you managing your boats and perhaps attacking other boats or dodging obstacles and such and the second part if your boats were specialize siege boats then you can use them as artillery pieces but if they were just transports then they just look pretty on the sand :3 or something like this

What I want to know is if we can finally place catapults or siege crossbows on walls.

I am wondering about the notion of fighting a troop landing battle and a naval battle at the same time. sure, if you're trying to land troops where an enemy army is present, you'll have to land your troops and fight on land, but how would the enemy have vessels? it's not like an army only travels along the coast, bringing a fleet of ships with it - just in case an enemy army tries to invade from the sea!

In relation to Siege battles, this could work if the City and the Port were one and the same, so a fleet of ships could be stored IN the city. This works well for settlements like Carthage, Alexandria, Rhodes etc, but not for ones like Roma (unless you want to argue about Ostia (which would be silly)).

EDIT: ZOMG! Because Roma is the centrepiece for the game, the battlemap version of it should be HUGE, and thus would stretch down the Tiber a little way to Ostia, so the enemy could land troops there, and then trek it up the the gates for a siege. that would be the siege to end all sieges (minus perhaps the Siege of Minas Tirith )

This sounds awesome, but I get the feeling that it would be impossible due to technical limitations.

The usual idea is to establish local naval superiority before landing the troops, since sinking the transports becomes the strategic goal of your opponent's forces.

I see....so you must first fight a naval battle and then a land battle?

I would like to see seaward defences being constructed, with chain gates and such. I really like the garrisonable ships in cities idea aswell. In responce to the OP, i definitely think you should be able to relaunch and control the ships. When they land they should have a small marine force on the ground to launch again, and if they get killed the ship should become stranded. Sort of like how only engineers can use ballistas and such. Would make for much more interesting strategies.

Interesting idea Lacedaemon. If a city has a chain gate, you should be able to land a unit and capture it to allow your ships in.

You might be thinking of how MBTs and destroyers stream into an enemy port or along the shore, blasting up the shore defenses.

It's stated that there will only be 1 battle type. Combined with everything that can be in the battlefield. So boats and land units and stuff should all be controllable on the same field. At least i hope so..

I am not very good with ancient naval warfare. Could someone please explain how a ship would sort of be like an artillery piece?

    Thanks everybody!
