Default Is it likely that there will never be war again?

I mean big wars between countries.

I'm not talking nuclear, though there is that, with how the economy is, there's some of me in you and some of you in me. Everyone has business interests overseas.

So with that said, would it be likely no major power will ever go to war directly and the battle field has shifted to the negotiation tables?

No, not at all. Do not underestimate the stupidity of people. Right now the only big country that might have the means for war is the USA. No other country has the logistics to perform an overseas operation and no big country right now has problems with their neighbours. Russia is content on selling oil and minerals and recovering its former power. No European nation will go to war in Europe. China is still getting stronger and stronger economically and they're not going to kill the golden goose any time soon. India has its border clashes with Pakistan to keep them occupied. The only hypothetical conflict I can imagine is with Iran. The USA right now cannot afford to go to war, although for me all bets are off if Romney wins. Some Israelis are rearing to go at Iran. The Saudis as well. But the EU does not like the idea. Mind you if for some idiotic reason there is an actual war with Iran, NATO will send at least its navy and some strike fighters to neutralize the Iranian ones. But we will do it kicking and screaming and only in case the US, Saudi Arabia and Israel go to war. Europe has its problems and has no need or desire to worsen them with a fuel shortage. If you're talking about wars between countries in general, I think you can be absolutely sure that it will happen.

Like I said, don't underestimate human stupidity and pride.

I'll assure you Nuclear weapons will become obsolete by the end of this century. Well if all goes to plan. I just can't wait for the United States to pull some rip-off invasion of Iran......................

There will be war, not between nations but between worlds. It's only a matter of time before the Curiosity rover stumbles upon the Prothean data cache and once it does, get ready for the intra galactic light show.

Oh there will be wars between countries ofcourse. Soon it will happen even in Europe, in the meantime the Americans always tend to find a reason to invade a country every 10 years or so.

Which is not the large, state on state warfare that seems to be the focus of this thread.

With what militaries? For what payoff? I'm sorry but this just doesn't seem realistic in the slightest, not to mention that there is simply no way that NATO would allow it. Could we see a collapse of the EU in some way, such as the abandoment of the Euro? Perhaps, but suggesting that we are going to see all out warfare among such demilitarized societies is more than a stretch.

Do I think that there will never be a war the scale of the World Wars? Possibly. But we are a LONG way from peace.

In recorded history there has barely been a year without warfare, and I'm sure those years had unrecorded wars going on.

    So my answer is....hardly.

A major conflict between industrialized nations is probably never going to happen again. The tut tut 'Murkika crowd really shouldn't chance a war with China, I know I don't want to roll the dice with trillions of dollars in hardware against relatively cheap ASMs.

Doubt the Chinese would be looking forward to a conflict either.

Honestly, the best example of a war between modern armies with relative parity is the Iran-Iraq war. Little bit of maneuver to start, air strikes, missiles and then they ran out of and dug trenches.

I hope we aren't dumb enough to ever dig trenches again, but the speed and efficiency of death on a fully modernized battlefield is something I don't want to see.

War will never go away, but a world war? Not without a total shakeup of the world. The previous 2 were from vendettas, maybe that will be the next one too, but we gotta get to some major power being seriously wronged by another major power first.

Btw, I think this goes in the Academy.

Based on history, yes it will happen.

But I doubt that there will be a huge war starting out with Russia, China or USA deciding "Lets blast the bastards". Most likely it would be a series of small conflicts (North Sea oil, Russian minorities in the Baltic or islands in Asia) that escalate into a larger conflict just like how pretty much all other major wars have started.
