    Default Total Noob Questions

Having read a few of the posts on here as well as several articles about tactics on the battlefield, I should say now that I think my question is going to be well beneath you all.

However, having bought the game and then being challenged to an online battle by a friend of mine I'm in serious need of some really basic advice.

I've fought the AI a few times, but that's obviously going to be totally different to going up against another human (who is totally new to this too btw).

If I'm honest, my battles so far have relied on me having a numerical advantage over the oppositon and just battering them rather than the use of any brilliant tactical decisions on my part.

So really any advice is welcome from how I should line up my troops to the units I should be using and who I should try to pit them against.

    Thanks alot for your help,
    Morty

Well, it depends on what faction you play, e.g as Greeks you have to rely on your phalanx, and keep the flanks secure.

As Romans, you should use the mobility advantage, and try to flank (unit wise). As Parthians, you should use your Horse Archers wisely, etc.

Infantry in the middle, cavalry on the sides.
Outflank him and he is yours.
If you need tactics for a specific faction just ask.

In contrast to the efforts of tiny Israel to make contributions to the world so as to better mankind, one has to ask what have those who have strived to eliminate Israel from the face of the earth done other than to create hate and bloodshed.

Thanks Valentin - that definitely sounds like a good place to start.

Having read around the forum a bit more this afternoon, I'm thinking of laying out my troops something like this:

    p-p-p-p-p-p-p-p-p-p-p-p-p-p-p
    a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a

    i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i
    c-c-c-c i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i c-c-c-c
    c-c-c-c i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i c-c-c-c
    i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i

    p-pikemen
    a-archer
    i-infantry
    c-cavalry

Ignore the numbers (i'm sure there are far too many there!!), but what do you think of the general formation?

If he can be enticed into attacking the centre of the formation, my pikemen and archers should be able to hold his forces up long enough for my calvery to get down the sides.

Or am I just being far too optimistic now :-)

MortimerJazz, put some of your infantry behind the archers on both flanks so that you can hold the phalanx line and not break them off and protect your sides even better.
