After a short journey from Spoleto, Viscount Cesare arrives in Rome. It has been a long time since he visited the Eternal City, but the Imperial Palace stands in great contrast to the rest of the city. He introduces himself to the guards at the door and is let in. He is shown to the throne room where another guard stands. He takes Cesare's sword and tells him about proper manners when talking to the Emperor. The doors are open and he goes in.

The 21 year old sits on the throne, reading a scroll. He looks strangely impressive despite his young ago, having carved out a large empire.

Cesare, not wanting to make a bad first impression, waits for the Emperor to call him up.

    Cesare kneels before the Emperor.

Greetings, Otto III, Emperor of the Romans, King of Italy and King of the Germans. I am viscount Cesare of Spoleto and I wish you many prosperous years of peaceful reign.

    He stands, inclining his head.
Welcome. How may I help you?

He claps. A man comes in with a tray carrying goblets.
    Please have some wine.

Otto smiles. He feels cheerful to see someone from his native land, Saxony.
    Guten Morgen, Rolf.

Cesare gets up from his knees and accepts the wine.

I have only come to pledge my loyalty to your imperial majesty. I have not been a viscount for more than nine months and I haven't had the time to visit the Imperial Capital yet.

    Otto bows.
Guten Morgen, your Majesty. The first reason I have come here is to reaffirm my oath of alligience to you, and wish that your reign be prosperous.

    He bows again.
It will not, your Majesty. The second reason is involving the pagans on the northern frontier.

He retakes his seat, indicating the he should too.
Yes, the pagans. And the count of Bremen is in constant danger. And so are we.
Well, what do you propose we do.

Rolf did as he was bid.
Well, after the rebellious and disloyal count of Baden is dealt with, I plan to strike out against the Pagans, your Majesty. I was wondering If I could get your royal blessing to do so.

Yes! We shall fly the banner of Christ from the Baltic to the Greek seas. What do you intend to do about the traitor count?

    he thought.
negotiate with him, for a time. Then, once I have finished with a local dispute in Nassau, I shall drive him out of the province by force of arms!
