Default The Devil's Advocate Thread - Does god Exist...

Ok I know I have not posted much on these forums and I expect most of them have not made much sense.

Now I have always believed that the best way to prove your point was to argue from the other side, how else can you understand the topic or the arguments involved.

So I would like this topic to be about the existence of god. I know there is a topic about this but I hope that with people arguing the other side there may be something new or even points that no one has said yet.

Ps. I don’t mind mods editing this post so it reads better or makes more sense

What do you mean "The other side?". You mean, like an atheist arguing FOR the existance of god? How would that work?

I think he means he intended this thread for people to play devils advocate.

I would think it would be quite obvious how it would work. How can you believe/not believe if you have not looked at from both sides? If you can argue from both sides it takes away blind faith and pointless repeating.

Not devils advocate because that implies a lack of respect for the other side

But the main thread revolves around the presentation of different viewpoints. Thats the entire function of an argument.

How can I argue from a religious persons perspective if I dont even know how they think? All I can do is regurgitate cliche phrases that would do nothing but enflame people.

Yep, and we'd inadvertantly or otherwise be making straw men arguments.

don't you think an atheist arguing for god would throw up an interesting argument?

it would only cause flaming if people showed a lack of respect

Maybe...a whole lot of room and potential for trolling and flamebaiting though. I, personally, would have to fall back on cliches and do my best impersonation of an overly zealous, slightly insane black preacher. I'm sure the christians here wouldnt appreciate that, it would seem like im mocking them or something.

And I surely dont want christians to do their best impersonations of atheists. It'll be nothing but...satan worshippers and pentagrams drawn on the floors, and child sacrifices.

wait are you saying that you dont atleast see the point or logic of thier point of view? I dont agree with them but I can easily see how they make an argument for their point of view. You can make an arguemtn for anything really.

I cant say im a very good arguere but I would sign up for the riligous side.

I don't know about others, but I'd sure as hell find it hard to propose an argument I have a rebuttal for.

someone who cant make an argument for the other side is omeoen who is too convinced in his own correctness. Ide expect riligous people to not be ale to make counter argumetns agianst the things they belive becuase most riligous people are completly convinced that the bible is teh absolute truth. But agnostics and athiests?

What would we be trying to argue for, exactly? Would we be trying to convince people of the merits of our religion or about how God exists? Because even real religious people cant prove that god exists and I dont think agnostics/atheists playing the religious person role could do any better.

what we are arguing about would abvously be up to the thread starter. Probobly not teh existance of god ebcause as you said thats an unprovable argument that usally revovles around occams razor and Darth Wong tearing people up. IM still trying to clean my shoes from the last time darth wong argued about the razor...
Like I said, its charlton's decision, as teh thread starter, to say what we will argue about.

So what everyone is saying is they do not understand the other position or they do not respect it enough. How can you argue against something you do not understand?

I don’t think I am making my point very clear. Sorry

I respect it, but I dont understand it, which is entirely the reason you see me in the pro religion thread asking a million questions. I DONT understand it, religious people confound me.

no harm in tying it anyways. The Mods can smell the smoke of flaming for miles, so no one will get hurt.
