Default Grandmaster of the Knights Hospitaller

This ancillary seems to have been triggered twice in Ragusa. Does anyone know where one can find the code for it - what triggers it and what it does? Does this general have to go to the Holy Land or can he stay in Ragusa? All my knights Hospitaller are presently in the Holy Land.

normally you get it after leading a succesfull crusade or defeating a Jihad army. I have seen it happen that multiple characters got the same trait (seldom though) you don't need hospitaller knights present to attain it.
what faction are you? do you happen to have a chapter house in the city?

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    Trigger hospitalleader
    WhenToTest CharacterTurnEnd
    Condition IsGeneral
    and CharacterReligion catholic
    and not I_WorldwideAncillaryExists hospitalgm
    and FactionBuildingExists >= st_johns_major_ch
and not HasAncType pks_chiv ;not already holding another chivalric office

    AcquireAncillary hospitalgm chance 10

Well one of the conditions to acquire the ancillary is that the ancillary doesn't exist already. So that's strange that you have it on two generals. Maybe it's possible if they were assigned on the same turn? Not really sure.

I can personally vouch for having aquired it on 2 different crusades

Are you sure that the first general didn't die before getting it a second time?

no, the reason I remember it was because I found it strange I had 2 generals with the same person in their retinue, I was crusaders states so I spent a lot of time crusading and fending of Jihads

That's right. The first general was Lord High Chancellor and Lord High Marshall for Venice who had fled Northern Italy when an inquisitor turned up. He was in Ragusa when he got the ancillary. There was no chapter house there, only in the Holy Land and only my faction. As soon as he died, a very lowly general in Ragusa got the trait, still no chapter house in Ragusa. This particular general had just been fending off some random AI attacks by Hungary. He had not been involved in any Crusades, neither had the first guy. At least the first guy was of some status but the second guy, and why Ragusa - maybe just chance judging by the code you posted. In fact the new Lord High Chancellor and Lord High Marshall was at the time in Jerusalem, where there was a chapter house and some Hospitaller knights.

Shouldn't this Grandmaster have something to do with the Hospitallers in some way? If not in the trigger, then as a battle commander or something?

By the way, similarly some governors get titles for the city they govern. Do the benefits (e.g. higher tax collection) remain if they go to another city? These ancillaries perplex me a bit. Maybe they are not meant to be taken too literally.

You don't need the chapter house in the same settlement as the general who gets the grandmaster. You just need to have a chapter house somewhere in one of your settlements. Based on the conditions in the trigger, as you said, it seems like it's mostly just up to chance who gets the ancillary.

As for the settlement specific ancillaries, you don't need to be in the same settlement for the ancillaries to work. The stat boosts they provide are the same everywhere.
