The only normal, cool characters are the turian private citadel guards.

He's normal in the sense that he doesn't have a million issues, and the issues he does have he doesn't constantly bring up hoping Shepard resolves them.

Anti Hero Badass almost always works , unlike a dumb bland conservative solder .

Liara, Tali, Lawson, Wrex,... I've seen them all a hundred times before, which in itself means little but Bioware really didn't do anything spectacular with the tropes.
Bioware is an example of people confusing high production values with quality.

Well sometimes it depends alot on how said cliché it is presented. being a cliché doesnt necessarly mean it can be simple minded.

Usualy i think video games dont realy know how to intruduce this romance concept very well. Probably because they are made by geeks with geeks in mind?! while the overal audience this days imo has put it behind a long time ago this stereotype.


And to be honest what need there is in ME games for romance archs? It only serves a superficial Role playing feature and i think this is my bigest concern on Mass effect games on this issue.
There is no consequence at all, its all superficial and acessory. You gain nothing diferent with romance one character from the other, it adds zero to the story besides a few cutscenes, and dialogue, its shalow and in the end it makes it uninteresting. Imo its why it fails at being a cliché.
Any love story will be a cliché at some point, for most of us, because we already seen it a thousand times in other stories and midia, they should have added severe consequences to the main story because of it. Otherwise is just there to make it look pretty on your Game resumé.
