Abortion: I think people should have that opportunity, but I certainly don't consider it a 'right'. Do I think that the state should take every opportunity to discourage it-short of criminalization- yes.
War in Iraq: In a struggle where each side's conception of success is so diametrically opposed it is generally the less ambitious party which best can muster the spirit to continue. I hope we will all come to realize that artifacts such as elections, polling stations, and even governments have far less to do with stable, liberal societies than do cultural mores and popular ideals.
Drugs: Should all be decriminalized.
Firearms: There are regulations which make sense. For example, I don't believe that anybody should have the 'right' to own an uzi or an M-16. I believe that hand guns should be strictly regulated[and registered], and I think that single-action and semi-automatic longarms should only be lightly regulated.
Gay Marriage: Yes, all for it.
Gay adoption: Yes, all for it. Most scientific analysis leads us to believe that behaviours are more heavily influenced by genetics and peer groups than by parents.
Religion in schools: Should there be discussion of different religions, yes. If different religions want to establish schools and provide education up to the standards of non-religious schools, that's fine with me.
Death penalty: Prison is always punishment enough. I think sentences need to be longer for violent crimes and fraud. I think felons with a high probability of re-offence should be kept behind bars indefinitely. Theft is not so serious, and I think perpetrators should be made to work to pay for all the items they've stolen, those wages being remitted to the victims.[if they won't work, they can spend as much time as they like in the slammer]
