Unspecified error on startup please help

I recently reset my laptop back to factory settings as it was kinda screwed. When it was done I updated all the drivers and installed medieval 2 gold, however whenever i tried to launch the game, either medieval itself or kingdoms what opens is half a screen of black which doesn't respond and then the unspecified error message pops up and it closes. I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times and cleared the registry but nothing seems to work, cold someone please help?

I've just tried to follow that method and i think i've found the problem, for some reason despite it being installed neither medieval or kingdoms is in the registry, the whole SEGA file is missing. That means there's a problem with the installation process right?

Assuming Win7 or Vista, disable the UAC before doing anything else.

ok done should i reinstall with the UAC disabled or do you not think that'll make a difference?

Reinstall with the UAC disabled and C:\Games is my choice of destination. If you're the only one using the computer, the UAC is a waste of time.

i had a poke around the registry and the sega file is there but in the wow6432 subkey not sure what that means though.

You have 64bit OS is what it means.
