Icon5 GPU vs CPU for Total War: Rome 2???

    Hello fellow total war fans

Now first off i would like to say that it almost seems as if a CPU plays a bigger role than the GPU on large scale battles. I'll tell you why i assume that thats the case. Well, i have an upper scale graphics card the AMD 6800 serries, although im getting the gtx 670 ftw. anyway my graphics card works fine with Napoleon, Empire and Shogun 2, although when it goes large scale say 20,000 units on the field it lags like a mofo. if i pause it, then it runs smoothly and perfect, if i unpause it, it goes ape again. and im guessing the processor is the thing that makes things run smoothly on large scale battles because there is some much processing. Im only asking this because Rome 2 is probobly 99.99% going to have 40 unit cards per team, and thats alot of units not to mention the huge cities and detailed invironments. so yeah can someone fill me in? Also CA better have some sexy optimization this time around considering i have a 6 core processor, and its useless without some decent optimization. Oh yeah my processor is the AMD phenom ii x6 1075 processor and my graphics card is going to be the GTX 670 ftw.

I would very much like to ... hold ... your processor ... for a ... little while ...

    Give it to me!!!

In all seriousness, I have a quad core and a 1gig graphics card, yet at random points during shogun 2, it crashes, telling me it ran out of video memory I desperately want to fix this for Rome II. I'm willing to spend up to £200.

OT: I think you should just be grateful for having such a wonderful CPU!

Where did you get this idea that Rome 2 will have 40 units per army? Unless CPU optimisation has been significantly improved this most likely won't happen.
    Computer specifications -
    GPU: GTX 780
    CPU: Intel i5 2500k overclocked @ 4 GHz
    RAM: 8 GB DDR3
    Motherboard: Asrock z77 extreme 4

if you look at the screenshot with the siege towers there are more than twenty units, although they can add as many as they want, why would they do that? its kind of false advertisment if you will. also alot of people liked 40 unit cards in FOTS, so why would they take out something good? i freaking hated that in napoleon total war the battle of waterloo consisted of like 5000 soldiers

lol its a nice processor but its useless without proper optimization

Do you mean false advertisement like in the rtw1 trailer video which is popping up in a thread
every now and then where people do ask what has happened from the time of the video
    until release of the game?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3y0tvky5Iw

Or the epic hugeXX size battles from Time Commanders before the game's release?

Honestly, I feel like at this point you're just trying to flaunt your PC in our faces.

Anyway moving on, mods really needa have a sticky on this fact of TW. Anything CA creates thats in the Total War series, will...always...be...highly...CPU...DEPENDENT. GPU's help, like for example little Kepler beats Southern Islands into the ground for Shogun 2, but they won't be the cap on your performance.

Both are important if you want to play large battles smoothly AND max out the graphics settings. But while you can always reduce graphics detail a bit and gain lots of fps, you have almost no control regarding the CPU requirements (except reducing unit size considerably which is kinda bad for immersion). So I would say the most powerful CPU (not necessarily sixcore as we know that won't probably help) with plenty overclocking too. Think Intels upcoming Haswell quadcore at 6 GHz, that would be a good start

Per-clock-performance of Haswell should increase by at least 10% versus Ivy Bridge and I hope overclocking potential reaches 5 GHz on air and 5.5 GHz on water.

Getting a hexacore CPU is just plain overkill and a waste of money, really.

Most modern games are GPU bottlenecked, not CPU
They probably wont optimize Rome 2 for hexacores, so its a waste of money

Also stop showing off your overkill computer specs

As many others and myself have stated in other threads, often created by you, you'll need both. And no, i do not think you will be able to max Rome2 on a single 670, or that CPU for that matter. Sorry.
