This could work for barbarian tribes as well, as there were often internal fights about who would be chief, but focusing on the Roman faction could there not be 4 or 5 different family trees for each faction? For example you have 5 different family trees running parrell and you (as the player) have to try your best to keep them all placid, some will have strong republican traits, some imperial others might have more leanings to other factions - you can intermarry between these families to stay off disuputs and make political alliances (as was done in real life) and you can bring other outsiders into these famalies forming seperate branches. When one branch rebels you would have a proper civil war with not just one general but several all rebelling at once. You can have the choice to execute all members of the family, just the ringleaders or forgive them- all these decisions can have consequences with foreign nations and the other famalies - What do people think?
