I'm opening this thread in order to talk about the user interface optimization for Rome 2.
I really hope that CA is going to do a better optimization on UI than that done for Shogun 2, since it seems that shogun UI causes a small, but noticeable and undesired, performance decrease.
I will going to make a comparison about UI used in "Rome engine" games and warscape engine ones.
Rome TW and Medieval 2 TW ("Rome engine")
I have done some tests on a modded medieval 2 installation (but tests made on rome and Med2 vanilla bring equal results). Here are some screenshots:
![]()
![]()
As shown, objects (like units, grass, buildings etc) below interface are not rendered: disabling UI causes more objects to be rendered, thus an fps (frame per second) drop.
It seems also that UI elements (such as ui cards, radar map etc) cause no performance losses.
In short:
- Objects below interface are not rendered (good!).
- UI elements cause no noticeable performance changes (good!).
- Thus enabling the battle interface causes an FPS boost.
Empire TW and Napoleon TW (Warscape engine)
Quick tests done on this two similar games have brought the following results (no screen is provided)
In short:
- Objects below interface are rendered (bad!).
- UI elements cause no noticeable performance changes (good!).
- Thus disabling/enabling the battle interface causes no FPS changes.
TW Shogun 2 (enhanced Warscape engine)
Tests made on that game have proven that the battle interface is causing some fps problems, as shown in the following screens:
![]()
![]()
![]()
In short:
- Objects below interface are rendered (bad!).
- UI elements cause noticeable performance loss (bad!).
- Thus enabling the battle interface causes a noticeable FPS loss!!! The opposite of Rome engine!
Note that this UI behaviour on performance is present on both of my 2 computers (with totally different hardware), and i have red of some other people that have this performance drop, althrough this doesn't mean that all of computers suffer of this problem (maybe).
Note that you can disable Shogun 2 UI by pressing K.
TW Rome 2 (better enhanced Warscape engine)
I hope that some better optimization will be made on battle interface: objects below UI should'nt be rendered, and ui elments should'nt cause performance loss. Also i hope tha UI will be more customizable than that of shogun 2 (for example in TWS2 there is'nt an otion to choose a "minimal ui", like in previous games).
And i really hope that the main menu will not have that 3d annoyng realtime rendered background like shogun 2, that increases loading times. For example, after a no-campaign battle (such as a custom one), you have to wait some precious seconds before seeing battle results and returning to main menu (because that3d rendered background is loading). In the previous titles (that had a really good background pre-rendered video) you could see battle results and return to menu almost instantaneously.
I also like to know what other people thinks.![]()
