Repairing Windows XP or 2000 Installations
• Make sure your Windows XP or 2000 CD is in your CD or DVD drive and hit the reset button.
• Make sure you are set to boot from CD before your hard drive. You can do this by entering your BIOS and looking for a section or topic called “Boot” or “Boot Device Priority”. Make sure your CD or DVD drive is listed before your OS drive and if it is not, alter it so that it is. Then, save changes and exit your BIOS.
• A message will be displayed after your BIOS screen disappears that says, “Press any key to boot from CD …..”. You have 5 seconds to press any key, so be quick to press “any key” (if you do not know where the “any key” is, box your computer up and never touch it again… you need more help than I am willing to provide).
• Now you should see the usual screen you saw when you first loaded the OS – blue with the device drivers being loaded. NOTE: If your OS hard drive is located on a SCSI Device (PCI slot Hard Drive Controller Card) or RAID Controller (PCI slot or Motherboard RAID Controller Card) you MUST press “F6” and have your Floppy disk ready that contains the drivers for the device that your OS hard drive is attached to and then insert it when it asks for it – then follow the prompts; once the driver is loaded, continue the CD startup process.
• Now, instead of pressing “Enter” to install XP or 2000, press “R” to Repair the installation.
• Wait a few seconds while it boots to the recovery console. Press “1” for your installation of Windows. NOTE: You will need your Administrator password if you have one set (as you should – XP Home installations typically do not as it does not ask for one on install – Good Game Micro$oft!) and will need to enter it now. If you enter the wrong password three times, your computer will automatically reboot and you will need to start this process over again – passwords ARE case sensitive.
• Once you are at the “C:\WINDOWS” prompt type (without the quotes and note the spaces): “fixboot c:” and then type "fixmbr" NOTE: Your drive letter might differ from that stated above. For example it might say: “D:\WINDOWS” in which case you will want to type: “fixboot d:” - also, make sure to enter Yes to any prompts to write a new boot sector and master boot record (MBR).
• Once that is done, type (without quotes): “exit” and your computer will reboot.
