Default 0h N0es!!! (Need help badly)

I was thinking of Un-installing Ubuntu for a little bit to try out the Linux distribution Blag. I've never uninstalled an OS though, and I think somehow I had window's and Ubuntu on the same drive, I think. I googled how to uninstall Ubuntu, and someone said do a system restore before you installed it. So, I did a system restore to July 3rd.

Now, when I boot up the computer, it says on one of the boot screens "Loading GUMP" (I think it is GUMP, it has to do with Ubuntu I know) then below it , it says Error 22, and stays their.

The only reason I am typing this is I used the Ubuntu LiveCD/Boot CD so I could ask for help. I want to avoid uninstalling Windows at all costs, I dont own a copy of it, the local comp store did, and I cannot afford to have it installed again.

I think I just uninstalled it with the system restore, but the master boot record is confused. Should I attempt to install Ubuntu again, on my D: drive? (Window's is on C: of course).

    I desperately need help

i have never used ubuntu but i know that windows got his own boot record ,which can be manually edited with no probs (if you know what are you doing, offcourse)..so i recon you should take your HD out & take it to any other pc ,find the boot.ini (system file + hidden on C & set the windows as first & only boot option (other simply delete) & it will work ...once you logged just delete your ubuntu ...

Cant do that, unless I can get ahold of a SATA to USB cable adapter, then I will just plug it into a USB port on another computer....

I'm kinda in a bad situation, I only have one computer where I am staying, and I cannot reformat C at all costs... uhg... Unless I quickly learn how to use ubuntu like I do windows , but I have a bad feeling about that.

If your master boot record is corrupted, I suggest you find a Windows 98 boot CD or floppy, boot up into DOS mode, and then run "FDISK /MBR". This should reset your master boot record and allow you to boot your Windows partition. It also has the effect of eliminating any bootloaders that Linux put into the MBR (most distros do this, although I have no experience with Ubuntu).

If you don't have a Win98 boot disk, you can go to www.bootdisk.com and grab one that can be made from more advanced versions of Windows.

Of course, I'm assuming that the problem is indeed in the MBR as you suspected. If it's more serious (eg- Windows itself being corrupted), then this won't fix it.

Yeah, i'll need to get to another computer to download that, as I am running off the Ubuntu Live/CD right now. I'm going to try to find an answer to this problem, and if I dont get it within the next couple days (as I only have until sunday, then i'm in huge problems to say the least) then i'm formatting C: and either doing A) Install Windows 98 ( I think I have the CD at home) or B) Installing some version of Linux, and just using Emulators to use windows programs.

Follow this (modified from Useful Links to fit his needs):
Repairing Windows XP or 2000 Installations

    • Make sure your Windows XP or 2000 CD is in your CD or DVD drive and hit the reset button.

    • Make sure you are set to boot from CD before your hard drive. You can do this by entering your BIOS and looking for a section or topic called “Boot” or “Boot Device Priority”. Make sure your CD or DVD drive is listed before your OS drive and if it is not, alter it so that it is. Then, save changes and exit your BIOS.

    • A message will be displayed after your BIOS screen disappears that says, “Press any key to boot from CD …..”. You have 5 seconds to press any key, so be quick to press “any key” (if you do not know where the “any key” is, box your computer up and never touch it again… you need more help than I am willing to provide).

    • Now you should see the usual screen you saw when you first loaded the OS – blue with the device drivers being loaded. NOTE: If your OS hard drive is located on a SCSI Device (PCI slot Hard Drive Controller Card) or RAID Controller (PCI slot or Motherboard RAID Controller Card) you MUST press “F6” and have your Floppy disk ready that contains the drivers for the device that your OS hard drive is attached to and then insert it when it asks for it – then follow the prompts; once the driver is loaded, continue the CD startup process.

    • Now, instead of pressing “Enter” to install XP or 2000, press “R” to Repair the installation.

    • Wait a few seconds while it boots to the recovery console. Press “1” for your installation of Windows. NOTE: You will need your Administrator password if you have one set (as you should – XP Home installations typically do not as it does not ask for one on install – Good Game Micro$oft!) and will need to enter it now. If you enter the wrong password three times, your computer will automatically reboot and you will need to start this process over again – passwords ARE case sensitive.

    • Once you are at the “C:\WINDOWS” prompt type (without the quotes and note the spaces): “fixboot c:” and then type "fixmbr" NOTE: Your drive letter might differ from that stated above. For example it might say: “D:\WINDOWS” in which case you will want to type: “fixboot d:” - also, make sure to enter Yes to any prompts to write a new boot sector and master boot record (MBR).

    • Once that is done, type (without quotes): “exit” and your computer will reboot.
That is what the tech board leader said. A lot of other people said the same thing I said about system restore

It doesnt say gump, it says grub doesnt it? Ohh well... its the linux bootloader that fails because something probably went wrong with the partitioning, it wont load and gets in the way of windows booting up as well.
