burnt gates kill my men in an instant?

As I was not aware of being able to burn down gates(lol) I did not use this feature but in one of the fots historical battle(2nd or 3rd) I need to assault a castle. I had the option to bombard the ammo depots which made the gates burnt down. I killed all the defenders marched out to walk in and finish with the remaining few when noticed that my unit cards are down to a few units. Basically all my men trying to walk through the gates died in a second. I can't tell if it would happen in normal game as I never tried burning gates but is it normal? I am sure there was considerable time spent before I tried going in and the gate was not in flame anymore.
Any thoughts?

There`s a really annoying mechanic when burning gates causes a ridiculous explosion that kills like 20 men. It`s not even like the gate is collapsing- it just explodes. It looks like the gates are filled with gunpower- It`s dumb.

I have no idea why CA though this was a good idea. Not sure if this is what you mean though.

no, I mean gates are burnt down, stopped burning, seemd to be in ashes. I send units to go through and they die(the whole unit) as soon as they try to enter.

I think it has something to do with the flames, I've experienced something like this once before. It truly is annoying, what's more annoying is your unit just keep sending troops through rather than making the rational and right decision of saying "Oh , it's not safe to go through there, we should stop!"

Yes. That was a feature in the Battle of Osaka for some reason. The moment you touch the burning gates, any unit that enters it will immediately die. This doesn't happen in any other battle. Just the Osaka Castle siege historical battle.

The only time this can happen in other battles is if you try to cross the gates before 100%. Once the gates hit 100% damage, something explodes and does massive damage to anything.

Same can be said for walls. It's stupid, but if you shoot a wall with a garrison infantry on top of it, they'll lose like 50% of their men. For some reason their walls are made of gunpowder too. Once that hits 100% damage, the infantry will go FLYING EVERYWHERE. More effective than shooting at them directly.

It ONLY happens in Osaka and Siege of Nageshima.

Once flames hit the gate of the kuruwa, or the dobei walls. Your men within that kuruwa will DIE.

(then again, the objective was to BREAK out of the burning fortress lest be roasted alive in Nageshima, so better head for open ground before the flames started spreading elsewhere.........its scripted to envelop the whole complex.)

As for Osaka, there are 3 gates. Lets say your position, the position near the archery dojo and the one facing the coast. The first 2 have towers which when you blow up, will make a massive explosion, then the narrator will scream in delight that you have blew up the Shogunate's hidden gunpowder stores.

The units within that kuruwa will then promptly vacate and attack you. Those are "no go" areas now. Likewise the bridge connecting to those gates will also blow up if you march in it. Hence its obvious that your forced to go to the farthest 3rd gate facing the coast.

Normally. The moment gates have damage 100%, its free to go, hell I have my taisho enter first because Masamune is that badass with flaming background all around him. Never had an issue of him dropping dead the moment he steps in.

You can go thru the Osaka historical battle without actually destroying the towers but you still want them to blow the bridges then they foolishly move to the main tier in good position to hit them with your armstrong gun. Then you burn the back gate and move thru to finish them shortly before the time runs out.

Anyways, cheers guys. As I said I neer tried burning it down out of the hist. battle, so thx for helping. On this note is there any special unit necessary to burn the gates or any unit is capable? how? In ROTS and FOTS also?

All units are capable.

For missile units, switch to melee then right click the gates when you see the burning icon. For cav units, dismount first.

You can also burn down archery towers this way.

Unless you are playing FOTS, then only traditional units can do it. Apparently being modern means you forgot how to throw torchs.

Oh yes.

I remember being forced to attack in a siege and because I hate the spider wall climbing decided to make my men destroy the gates with torches. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that my army full of predominantly modern rifles didn`t have the means to destroy a gate with torches while my few Levy spearmen did.

I was mentally cursing CA for such a stupid design decision. It screwed up what should have been a simple alternative tactic.

And no one say it was for `balance`.

Solution: molotov the gates and run back out of enemy range, wait till gates stop burning.

To be clear, however, the gates DO explode on regular battles. I lost my general to one, once.

Well, I never tried to use bow units to burn down the walls, so I didnt know. Thanks a lot.
