    Default The Lament of Lordaeron.

Our story begins in the kingdom of Gilneas. Protected by the mighty Greymane wall, Gilneas stands secluded from the rest of the world. Here, we find a young boy, on the verge of manhood, obsessed with the outside world.

Chapter I: The forests and fields.
Anduin was a tall, lean boy with short brown hair, a small nose, and dark eyebrows. He was never a particularly strong lad, not really into sports, nor was he in to fighting. Much to the dismay of his father Tobias, Anduin always seemed to have his nose in a good book or an ancient scroll of some sort. Tobias tried to get the boy interested in fighting and training, but without much success, so Tobias tended to favour Anduin's elder brother Varian instead, who was always at the stables horse riding, or training with his father in the arts of battle. Anduin didn't mind though, he preferred to be in his scrolls, and was delighted when his mother convinced his Father to hire a proper tutor. Anduin has been taught the ways of the scholar, the quill ; speech and eloquence, as well as numbers and history. Now, after thriving for so long under his Master, Anduin is finally free to make his own choices in the world.

    Duskhaven, Gilneas.
Anduin sighed as he gazed out of the window of his bought house in the village of Duskhaven. Rain again. He thought, as he watched the rain beat down upon the muddy ground, and the blackened trees sway violently in the wind. He he sat down at his study and whetted his quill, carrying on with his great task.
"The Legacy of the Duskglen family" he read to himself in his head. He had been lucky to afford this house, but the noble had paid him handsomely to write the history of his family and it's important role in Gilnean politics, plus it's involvement in the second war, which was rare for a Gilnean family, since so many were secluded and refused to help their cousins of Lordaeron and Stormwind. The Noble, Jacob Duskglen, was more than happy to pay him the handsome sum of 150 Gilnean Crowns once he had seen his basic manuscript, which was enough for Anduin to be able to live comfortably in Duskhaven. He began writing about the Families illustrious past and it's early founding members that existed in king Thoradin's time, writing in detail about how they were distantly related to the King by marriage. He will like that. He thought.
The lords are especially proud if they have any relation to the great Thoradin.Him, he had no great connections save for a very thin relation to a minor noble in Lordaeron. His family were mainly merchants, well off enough to afford a decent home in the capital. One that he left when he was old enough, to make himself some gold as a scholar. He was writing about how the Duskglen's played an important role in driving the troll's off in the Arathi highlands, when a knock came from his door, short and sharp. He swiftly rose, leaving his work to settle as he opened the door. He grasped the handle, and pulled. The door opened to reveal a figure, and he immediately became flushed and distorted when he saw who it was.
    It was Jaina.

The slender, dark eyed girl stood in the doorway as her brown hair gleamed in the dim light of the sun that was re-emerging from the clouds like a skulking weasel that didn't want to be noticed. Anduin immediately became uncomfortable. "um- er... hello." he managed.
Jaina smiled. "Anduin. Could you... help me out? my family is in a bit of a problem." she said uncomfortably. Clearly she was not used to this.
"O - of course!" Anduin managed again.
"My brother, well, he's in a bad way. He was apprehended by that toff, Jamerson's boys, and now they won't let him go. You have a way with words, and they might think your important. Could you help us?" She was almost pleading, and Anduin couldn't refuse. He had known Jaina for a while, since she was educated in Gilneas city with him, and she saw him as a close friend, and so did he, but his uncomfortable nature around her made it quite obvious that he wanted something... more fulfilling. He sighed as he pulled on his raincoat and hat, making an effort to dress in his finest clothes, which didn't make sense, unless Jaina was involved of course. He was uneasy saddling his horse ; Nightbane, but he calmed it with a soft pat on the head. Jaina had walked, so she climbed on behind him and swung her arms around him, thinking nothing of it. Whereas Anduin developed that "Strange tingly feeling" that he got whenever she touched him. His cheeks had grown red, and he made sure not to turn so she didn't notice as he asked her where they were going.
"Goldenglow house" she said, and he nodded and rode off towards his destination. He had never liked the Jamerson family, due to their nature of thuggery and low cunning. They were an impoverished noble family who tried to collect money by acting as loan sharks, asking for a king's ransom when the borrower had only been lent a paltry sum. Fortunately, everyone here seemed to think he was some sort of noble, due to his clothing and home, and apparent wealth. Anduin didn't mind keeping up that illusion, and he certainly cast it as he rode towards Goldenglow house.

Anduin dismounted and placed a hand on his rapier, trying to appear confident while Jaina stayed out of sight. He approached the thug, and with a stern voice he said ; "You there, what are you doing? I have been informed that you are keeping a man of the Lochmoore in this house, and I demand that you bring him out now!"
    The thug shrugged. "Why?"
That caught Anduin of guard. but he reminded himself of that time when he was performing that play as king Genn, and resumed his authoritative tone.
"The Lord Godfrey has shown... special interest in the man" He knew the Jamersons answered to Godfrey, and he tried to be as genuine as possible.
The thug squinted, then raised his eyebrows. "Right away sir!" he replied, hastily, and Anduin allowed himself a smile as the thug fetched out what he presumed to be Jaina's brother, tied up in fetters. He tossed the thug a silver crown and tipped his hat. "The Lord Godfrey will be most pleased" he said, in his most sinister voice, and rode to where Jaina was hiding in a bush about 40 meters away. "Is it him?" she said, almost tearfully, undoing the fetters and taking of the mask. She hugged him tightly while anduin stood, flushed. "Oh Aenas we were so worried! Promise me you will never do that again!" she cradled his head as he looked around groggily. She turned to him suddenly, kissing him on the cheek which made him blush even more. "How can I ever repay you?" there were a lot of things Anduin could have said, but he simply stammered. "I-I - errm, Uhh..." as she hugged him, and he rode them back to Duskhaven with Jaina and her brother on his horse. He had no time for books or his project that night, and after a quick hug goodbye, he collapsed into his bead, his mind swimming with thoughts of Jaina.

    Chapter II: The Horsemen Cometh

    1 Month later, Gilneas City

Anduin looked forlornly out of the carriage window as the wheels spun and it slowly but surely was pulled down the streets of Gilneas City. Jaina was sitting next to him, half asleep as the carriage slowly moved towards his new home, their new home. He had realised after that night that he could be more than friends with Jaina, and he had worked on it incessantly for the coming weeks. They fell in love, and eventually, after finishing his project, he had asked her Father for his blessing after their first "frolics" together. Aderon Lochmoore had gladly promised his daughter to a rich and prosperous scholar, who had recently been patronised by the lord Duskglen, and had been rewarded for his scholarly works with a generous stipend. The wedding would take place soon, in the grand cathedral of Gilneas City itself, where the Bishop would carry out the grand ceremony. As he was lost in thought, the carriage thundered to a halt outside their new home. Jaina was still asleep, and he gently shook her awake. "Darling, we're here." he said, and she smiled at him tiredly as they got up and out of the carriage. The sky was grey, but the sun shone through slightly like a small glimmer of hope. Anduin walked towards the home, holding Jaina's hand tenderly as he inspected it. It was tall and imposing, but large, which was good. Anduin had a feeling he would live in comfort here, and that feeling was magnified as he stepped into the house. It was warm and cosy, and the furnishings he had ordered had already arrived. Anduin was exhausted after the trip, and ascended the Stormwind Oak steps to the master chamber, where he admired it's grandeur. Jaina had already seemingly got to work around the house, making sure everything was in order as she was wont to do. He admired her slender figure as she sorted out the house, and in truth, he was still a little nervous about the coming months. All of his affairs had been put into order, with furnishing the house in duskhaven into and inn and selling it for a handsome profit to a landlord to keep him going, and a plot of land on the outskirts of stormglen village to keep his income steady while he looked for a new commission.
He didn't have to look far.

After settling down for a while, and committing some raucous activities in the bedchamber that night, Anduin heard the sound of hoofs beating upon the road, and so gently stirred himself without waking Jaina. What could anyone want at this hour? He thought as he washed his face with water and dressed himself, with a sharp knock coming at his door. He descended the stairs, and opened the door to reveal a quite thickly set man in a fine uniform. " His majesty wants to see you. Come with me now" Anduin stammered, but he was gently tugged out of the doorway and forced to quickly lock up before being gently pushed into the highway. Flanked by royal guards, Anduin was escorted to the King's residence in the City, Greymane keep. It was a fabulous structure, with huge imposing towers and a great portcullis and drawbridge, resembling the mouth of a wolf. He was awestruck as he was led through the narrow corridors of the castle, to the King's private solar. "Leave us." the king said to his guards, as Anduin bowed. "Your Majesty" Anduin stammered, whereas the King Genn merely waved his hand and invited him to take a seat. Anduin sat down, fidgeting, trying to calm himself. The King peered at him absent mindedly, studying him. "Your a scholar, then?" The gruff voice said. something made Anduin think he was asking out of politeness, and that he already knew the answer. Anduin gulped. "Yes, Lord King. I have already completed some projects for the Local Lords." The king nodded slowly as he pulled out an old scroll, covered with markings and runes. He placed it in front of Anduin and unrolled it, then he tapped upon the runes. "I want you to tell me what these say. None of my Court Wizards or alchemists have the slightest notion of how to read it." The King's expression looked inquisitive, watching to see if Anduin could read it. Anduin stared hard at the runes, scrambling them together in his head, desperately trying to remember what that dwarf had taught him as he was visiting Kharanos. Definitely dwarf runes. He thought as he stared long and hard, deciphering them in his head. He pieced the sentence together in his head and nodded. "I think I have it, lord King. The scroll says "When dusk falls upon the water, when darkness falls across a kingdom of Magic and a kingdom of the Light, then the hour of the wolf will dawn for the kingdom Behind the Wall."" Genn nodded, fascinated and thoughtful at Anduin's intellect. "this is truly a disturbing prophecy." The king said quietly in his gruff voice. "But thanks to you, my court wizards can decipher it's means. That's why I want to offer you the position of my court Scholar, as your abilities are the best I have ever seen. You will offer advice upon matters of diplomacy and state, and you will help deal with special matters such as this. You will recieve a stipend of 100 gold every month from the royal purse. " Anduin's mind turned and twisted, and he grew dizzy. He stammered "Of course, Lord King. I accept gladly" The king smiled, which was apparently quite rare. "Good. you may by all means return to your home at dusk, but every morning I expect you to be at the castle, by 10. AM when I hold court before Luncheon" He said sternly.
Anduin bowed and nodded, returning home to give his wife the good news.

    4 months later, Capital city.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

The weather had grown cold in Lordaeron, but it had begun to subside, and the dark clouds and small showers of snow were beginning to subside into sunshine and glorious grasslands. Anduin sighed as he glanced outside his study window, contemplating if obeying the King's orders was wise. Of course it was, you fool. he could hear himself say in his head. It had been an honour to work with the esteemed magi of Dalaran, discovering the origins of this mysterious plague by delving into ancient texts and scrolls. But a part of him missed his house in Gilneas city, and Jaina. She had got pregnant before he left, something he was jubilant about, but sad that he had to leave. Anduin smiled as he thought of the child that she would soon have, and he reminded himself to ask king Terenas for leave to travel back home soon. He set down his paper and began writing his newest report to the Archmage who was in charge of the entire effort.
He had found, recently, something that had occurred that was similar to this plague. He had found an account of a soldier's expedition north with his comrades, and it detailed how they were attacked by strange arachnid creatures, that were clearly described as "Neither living, nor dead" that claimed many of his comrades lives.

A sketch of the Arachnid creature.

After this attack, it seems that they were attacked by savage ghoul like creatures and strange wizards, whom infected his comrades with a strange sickness, which matched the symptoms of the Plague. Drowsiness, followed by senility and immovability. The symptoms are not described any more than that, as the diary is cut short not long after, which is most troubling. Anduin checks his report then sighs. He just hopes prince Arthas will be able to find the source of this plague, and soon.

There was also news of a prophet who had spoken in the court, shape shifting from a raven into a man and proclaiming that the tides of darkness would come again. This worried Anduin slightly, and noted that the prophet remarkably matched the description of the Wizard Medivh. Anduin was beginning to wonder whether Lordaeron would have been the right choice...
