Different fighting styles
I think we all know that a lack of unit variety won't be a major issue in this title. The time period of RTW has proven to be a fantastic source of all kinds of interesting units from all over the world.
I thought it would be fun to speculate about what kind of units we'll see in TWR2. They can obviously do a much better job than they did in Rome 1 for all the factions, and unlike some folks here I trust CA to handle this well.
So, as an example, I'll try to use my very amateurish knowledge of history to try to figure out some Gaulish units we could see, or rather the fighting styles used by their infantry:
Dudes who just furiously charge the enemy:
In other words, much like how damn near every Celtic unit was depicted in Rome 1. I think that while it certainly wasn't the preferred style of many Celts, it did happen. It's certainly known that intimidation and "scare tactics" were used by the Gauls. I just hope that such units won't be depicted with some strange arcadey mechanic such as the Warcry in RTW.
From what I can tell, charges are a generally a trait that was very common amongst the Gauls, and most of their melee units, both light and heavy, loosely or tightly formed, should have considerable charges. A well timed mass charge should have a considerable impact, both in terms of damage and morale.
"Phalanx":
There's loads of evidence supporting that a phalanx-like formation was used by Gauls, especially certain tribes such as the Helvetii. We can't of course know what exactly was meant by this, but having units who can fight in some sort of dense formation with shields and spears would certainly make sense.
Light Infantry: Javelins were certainly used very often by the Gauls. I think it would make sense for them to have peltast-like units who are primarily meant to skirmish but who are also capable of running in to support in melee, but not hold the line by themselves.
Romanesque?:
Everything I've posted so far is of course speculative, but this is especially so. A lot of Roman and Gaulish equipment is very similar, a lot of Roman stuff probably is directly based off of Celtic gear. So while it may be a bit of a stretch, I think that it could make sense to see a "sword, heavy javelin, mail, helmet and big shield" unit that fights in a similar manner to a legionaries. I know that Europa Barbarorum has such units for example.
So just for the Gauls we could see a huge variety of fighting styles, and such variety I think could be more the rule than the exception. If done right, all factions/cultures could have a huge variety of styles at their disposal.
So yeah, what kind of units and fighting styles should be present, and how many different styles should there be per faction?
