Default Atheists are America's most hated minority

Atheists identified as America’s most distrusted minority, according to new U of M study
What: U of M study reveals America’s distrust of atheism
Who: Penny Edgell, associate professor of sociology

MINNEAPOLIS / ST. PAUL (3/28/2006) -- American’s increasing acceptance of religious diversity doesn’t extend to those who don’t believe in a god, according to a national survey by researchers in the University of Minnesota’s department of sociology.

From a telephone sampling of more than 2,000 households, university researchers found that Americans rate atheists below Muslims, recent immigrants, gays and lesbians and other minority groups in “sharing their vision of American society.” Atheists are also the minority group most Americans are least willing to allow their children to marry.

Even though atheists are few in number, not formally organized and relatively hard to publicly identify, they are seen as a threat to the American way of life by a large portion of the American public. “Atheists, who account for about 3 percent of the U.S. population, offer a glaring exception to the rule of increasing social tolerance over the last 30 years,” says Penny Edgell, associate sociology professor and the study’s lead researcher.

Edgell also argues that today’s atheists play the role that Catholics, Jews and communists have played in the past—they offer a symbolic moral boundary to membership in American society. “It seems most Americans believe that diversity is fine, as long as every one shares a common ‘core’ of values that make them trustworthy—and in America, that ‘core’ has historically been religious,” says Edgell. Many of the study’s respondents associated atheism with an array of moral indiscretions ranging from criminal behavior to rampant materialism and cultural elitism.

Edgell believes a fear of moral decline and resulting social disorder is behind the findings. “Americans believe they share more than rules and procedures with their fellow citizens—they share an understanding of right and wrong,” she said. “Our findings seem to rest on a view of atheists as self-interested individuals who are not concerned with the common good.”

The researchers also found acceptance or rejection of atheists is related not only to personal religiosity, but also to one’s exposure to diversity, education and political orientation—with more educated, East and West Coast Americans more accepting of atheists than their Midwestern counterparts.

The study is co-authored by assistant professor Joseph Gerteis and associate professor Doug Hartmann. It’s the first in a series of national studies conducted the American Mosaic Project, a three-year project funded by the Minneapolis-based David Edelstein Family Foundation that looks at race, religion and cultural diversity in the contemporary United States. The study will appear in the April issue of the American Sociological Review.
Yes, the red-state Americans actually hate atheists even more than Muslims or gays. Apparently, there is nothing out there which is more abominable than not believing in God.

weird, as I have yet to see "atheist hate crimes" though I suppose they are harder to identify.

It seems that this hate of athiest stems from the idea that atheists have no morals, which is wrong.

As LR said, these people forget that atheists have morals too, its just that they make thier own instead of following someone elses.

The point is that most Americans are bigoted towards Muslims, but they're bigoted towards atheists even more.

Darth, I don't care what you post here from any publication. I don't hate atheists at all, and what we are talking about is individual attitudes.

As you might expect, having an academic background means that I've known many atheists and agnostics. Most of these have been friendly acquaintances (sometimes colleagues), and some have been close friendships. In fact, I tend to like atheists much better than agnostics ... the purity of their belief is something that I, as a theist, can readily identify with.

But what it always boils down to is the individual. If you like someone, you like them. It's as simple as that. But I would never extend my dislike for an individual atheist to the group as a whole. As I'm sure you know, you cannot ascribe the aspects of a part to a whole, from a logical standpoint.

The fact that the majority of Americans hate atheists more than any other minority does not mean that you necessarily do as an individual. But the problem is still there.

He's just pointing out that it's usually assumed that there is more prejudice towards muslims and gays than atheists.

As LR said 'I have yet to see "atheist hate crimes"' but you do get hate crimes against muslims.

Here's a conversation I've had about five times in the last 15 years.

Theist/Christian: " So, what do you believe then?"

    Me: "I'm an atheist."

    Theist/Christian: "I don't believe you."

Me: "Eh? What do you mean? As I said - I'm an atheist."

    Theist/Christian (*smugly*): I don't believe you.

Me: That's the dumbest argument I've ever heard. I'm lying then?

Theist/Christian: Yes. Or you just think you're an atheist.

Me: Do you just think you're a Theist/Christian?

    Theist/Christian: No.

Me: So why do you think I just 'think' I'm an atheist?

Theist/Christian: Because you just say that and you might even think you believe it, but no-one can really be an atheist.

At this point I leave the idiot and go and find someone else to talk to and/or a single malt Irish whisky.

I have no problems with anyones beliefs. They believe what they believe and as a result treat others the way they feel they should be treated.

why? Im an athiest I would participate if asked, although I dont have anything else to do...

anyways, they dont say in the article where the households where that were survied. They said that the east coast, west coast, and mid-west all have diffrent views on the matter. America has 300 million people interdispersed in 3,618,784 square miles. thats one house for every 18,093 square miles and one one american for every 58 thousand americans ( using 2.5 as average # of people per house). I dont know how much is needed for a survey to be considered accurate but for a country as varried, large, and populous as america I think more than 2000 houses are needed , especially considering that probobly only one person per house answered. I also wonder how they spread the 2000 calls out over america. As they said the midwest likes athiests much less than the east and west coast, but the east and west coasts are also far more populous ( so if the calls were spread out evenly per state, then the middle states would be over represented).

At the same time, the reason this seems odd to me is becuase ive grown up in California. Ive been in other states but never for enough time to get a feel of opinoins there or for others to find out im an athiest. In califonia, especially in teh bay area, there are alot of athiests and people who go to church without beliving in god ( family pressure). It just seems ludicrous that people would fear athiests. Must of us have the exact same morals as christians. Judeo-christian values are soaked into out society and law system. You dont have to be riligous to learn the 10 commandements. In fact the 10 commandements are common-sense to most people nowadays. And whaty famous atheist criminals are there? every serial killer ive ever heard of has been christian and belived that he was gods personel master-chief on a mission to kill. The women who killed her 4 children who is (was?) in the news did it becuase she said she heard god telling her to. If anything, athiests are more job and buisness oreintated.

You do realize that all polls fail the logic test, aren't you? Specifically, the fail the Fallacy of Composition, which says that, "The fallacy of Composition is committed when a conclusion is drawn about a whole based on the features of its constituents ...".
No poll can withstand the most structured form of logic. To test a poll against a mathematical logic is like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.

Polls are a somewhat crude device, and all they truly do is give some evidence for a general trend in a certain direction. There is no stipulation that states the conclusions drawn from any poll cannot later be refuted. I listen to polls but I try to take them all with more than a grain of salt.

Still, realistically speaking, I'd wager if I went around claiming to be an athiest or if I were to join a public athiest organization that I'd at least be singled out by a good number of people. Our country(the U.S.A.) is basically christian, and this is hardly more evident anywhere else than here in the 'bible belt'.

My honest assessment is that it's pretty much the same as most social and cultural mores prevalent in any society. Heck, the vehemence of debate and even downright conflict between theists and non-theists in this forum is not incredible evidence itself.

People love to hate religion as much as the lack of it. For shame.

I don't find these results surprising at all. Were I a believer I wouldn't want to talk to someone who can point out the weaknesses of my faith. Being on the losing side of the argument is far from being pleasant, especially when it has to do with one's conception of the world.

I've never lost an argument about the faith with an atheist. The reason: they can't say anything that impacts negatively upon my belief in God. Faith is faith. You can't say, "There is no God", and "win" the argument.

They must not have hit where it hurts. To win an argument against a believer you just have to point out the huge incoherences in his/her speech, and his/her complete lack of proofs to back up his/her claim. You can't prove God doesn't exist, but you can quite easily prove a believer wrong.
As for your "invicibility" against atheists, you weren't very inspired the last time we jousted: neither you nor Valentinian dared to answer my last post (http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showp...postcount=138). :original:

Afterwards, as Kanaric said: you can win the argument one hundred times, some will refuse to see reason no matter what. It's comprehensible after all, their whole conception of life, death and of the world is at stake.
