Default Need help setting up wireless internet

I moved to a new place, taing my desktop, and where I used to use a regular connection, I now have to set up a wireless one.

But I have had n success so far. Problem is, I can't set up the new IP correctly. I think some DNS stuff is missing. Thing is though, since I am not physically connecting the computer anywhere, I'm not sure how the IP can be set.

I'm currently at a cybercafe, so if anybody can suggest something /link to a knowledgeable source pronto, it would be awesome indeed. Otherwise I can check the topic tomorrow. I need internet at my place for work/work search reasons, so it is rather important

    Thanks in advance
"For myself, I would see the White Tree in flower again in the courts of the kings, and the Silver Crown return, and Minas Tirith in peace: Minas Anor again as of old, full of light, high and fair, beautiful as a queen among other queens; not as a mistress of many slaves, nay, not even a kind mistress of willing slaves. War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all; but I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend: the city of the Men of Númenor, and I would have her loved for her memory, her ancientry, her beauty, and her present wisdom. Not feared, save as men may fear the dignity of a man, old and wise."

This is one of those situations where it's very difficult to give good advice over the internet as we have no idea about your modem setup or your ISP. Could you provide that info? Why do you think you need to input an IP number? That shouldn't be necessary unless you're set up to use a fixed IP address. If that's the case then you're paying for the privilege and should have access to your ISP's technical assistance line. More info on your situation is required before anyone can really give good advice. Good luck!

That's what I've been thinking as well, regarding the fixed IP address thing (namely, that there shouldn't be one).

Modem setup: There's a router which belongs to the owner of the place (I'm renting), and I'm using a USB device to connect to the router.

What's strange though, is that I have perfect signal and can connect to the place's network, but my configuration must be messed up somewhere, for I cannot access the web. Perhaps some remnant of my former internet setup, which was a broadband?

But yes, I'll have to contact the ISP technical assistance. Ah, the laziness I feel right now...

    Thanks

Yeah, that's what I thought. Unless the owner of the house/apartment is running an unsecured WiFi setup then you'll need to get the passcode from him in order for your system to access the modem. Go to them before you try contacting tech support - you'll save yourself time and aggravation. Good luck!

EDIT: As I look again I see you can see an internal network. What exactly is your housing situation if I may ask? Are you dealing with a owner/proprietor or a larger business with a manager of some type? Also if you could list the error message you're receiving when getting blocked from the internet might help to track down the source of your problem. Good luck!
