I have GIMP 2.6 so not sure how to unit edit like here,can't access individual sections on skin to edit,ie layers,how to do? I will try to get Photoshop if I can and use this excellent tutorial.

Photoshop, GIMP (this one's free !), Paint Shop pro, ...

I have photoshop but when i open a unit for expample i just get the little unit card

@Joker. Unfortunately nvidia change the paths to their utilities every now and then so sometimes the links I post go dead. I've updated the OP with a link to infranview (which I use myself)..

It seems to be the Rectangle Select Tool,with variations in use. Sorry I am trying to learn,layers has me confused to edit.

I was under the impression that the skinning process would be an excruciatingly painful process before I read this tutorial.
Unfortunetly, I cannot use photoshop with Win 7 X 64 bit. However, I have downloaded Gimp and should be able to do something similar.

Skinning can be painful, but it's a hell of a lot of fun once you get the hang of it.

You mean right after UV-mapping ? I dont think so, but it's fairly simple . Just copy-paste some base textures from google or other skins, and then you can work on them
