Cool, you've grasped the basics now getting better is just a matter of time and practice.

Studying skins of the better artists around and paying attention to the details are the best way to improve, historical accuracy, umm it's not important at all imo.

Getting there, I'd lose the lion on his chest, it's a bit unrealistic. Besides it's just printed on and looks a bit odd.

This is the Principle I made for Sicilia, not the most detailed, I guess I was being a bit lazy with this one..

This is a similar unit which I took a bit more time over (he's also 512x512), suggest you study the details of the shadows and highlights, see what you come up with..

I quite like the lion but it does look stuck on. I need to get into modelling I guess, but thats a little bit more serious . I was going to place a smaller version of the lion on only one side of the chainmail but of course you cant can you? I didnt realise you could use a higher res! That looks about a thousand times better than mine!

Can see I've got a long way to go........

    Not that far..

You can unwrap the UV map, but if your able to do that you may as well add a plane..

On this unit I have a similar broach but you can see I've added leather ties which disappear under the shoulder pads and 'connect' the broach to the curiass, I also placed the body in from the edge so UV mapping was easier.

Firstly my advice is to use 512x512, larger res might give you more detail but it means you have to do a lot more work, it's unnecessary.

Metal; depending on what you want it to look like, I prefer a very distressed look. To get the effect use a 1 point brush and scribble a few random shadows with the burn tool, then do the same with the dodge, then just work them in with a larger brush. The brush I use for this is the faded ones.

    The finished product.

Any areas that are to white will blind you once in game so best to dull them down a bit, other than that these are looking pretty good. I still say you should work with 512x512 though.

AND WHAT BRUSHES DO YOU USE?
    Basic round brushes.

How do you make belts for the unit in 3d max.I making it using planes but it takes way too long to make one?!
I don't generally use seperate belts, I just add them to the base textures.

Could you please edit your posts and put your images in spoilers. Apart from stretching the pages they take an age to load up. Ta.
