iv fixed the text problem so the battles load but the skin on the units still isnt changeing
may it be because i havent installed the DDS utilites properly?

Are you editing RTW skins or BI??.

it works fine with BI just not on rome
Where exactly are you putting files? make sure its not in packs/data/models_unit if you've unpacked there that's not read by game its just for your reference. In rtw you need to add textures folder so you have rtw/data/models_unit/textures and put new textures in there. You may also need to change the name of the texture (in the tga and in descr_model_battle.txt) so that it looks for your new tga and not the one that's still in the .pack

Your skin's alpha isn't done correctly. You sould have layer called alpha in you DDS file if it not cover the shield edit it yourself.keep getting a weird black square around my units shields is there anything I can do to stop this?

Look at the pic in section four (1), the box on the right where layers-channels are, click on the channels tab.
Really sorry turns out my channels were fine I just saved my skins the wrong way Im thankful that people have the patience for n00bs so sorry for the hoo ha.
