    Default Campaign map idea...

This is probably going to be shot down within the hour, but I don't give a rat's...

Anyone else think it would be cool and slightly humorous if instead of a modern, accurate map of Europe, Africa, and Asia, CA instead used one of those really inaccurate maps that traders made DURING the medieval era? You know, the ones where Italy looks like a bloated tumor, England is gigantic, etc. etc.

    something like this: http://academic.emporia.edu/aberjame...ap/h_map03.jpg

At least you could say you're fighting in the mindset of a medieval conqueror

That'd be interesting, but completely hard to navigate considering most people are used to looking at more accurate maps.

It would definitely capture some atmosphere. IIRC, the original MTW map had one or two giant sea creatures on it. And of course Shogun had different drawings on it...

But if you've looked at any the recent campaign screenshots, the campaign map looks near exact to Rome's just with slightly better and darker textures.
A tyrant must put on the appearance of uncommon devotion to religion. Subjects are less apprehensive of illegal treatment from a ruler whom they consider god-fearing and pious. On the other hand, they do less easily move against him, believing that he has the gods on his side.

It'd actually be pretty cool if your minimap looked like that...and a lot easier to implement...

It would also be somewhat misleading I'd imagine, and as a result an unneeded burden on the player.

They can start doing maps like that when they start naming TW games under the fantasy or magic titles.

Besides... you already get hordes of sicophants screaming about unrealistic faction starting positions or even the location of cities...

show them that map and you might actualy make them implode and form a black hole.

Actually this isn't such an odd idea at all. It certainly crossed my mind that it is possible (though a LOT of work) to deform real geography to fit ancient and medieval maps. Question is indeed whether the the novelty value of such a map would make up for the compromised realism of the geography. Let's face it, even if you do not turn "fog of war" off, you will become familiar with the map after a few games and the novelty value will disappear.

I totaly agree that it is an idea to toy with, but in reality, ... maximum it can be it is just an overview map... that would be cool, but the whole map, I don't think so...
still, it is a fun idea, maybe an idea for modders

I think it would be a good idea in the style of M:TW's map, but not the 3D map of the sequal.

Agreed. It would have been perfect for MTW, but the Battlemap Rendering in MTW2 is linked directly to the actual map: Hence it wouldnt work.

It could you know. We can, at present, make maps with widely different scales (the real world area represented by one pixel). The ancient maps could be considered maps with "spatially variable resolution". If England were huge, then that part of the map would end up with a higher resolution (like in Arthurian: Total War) whereas areas understimated in size could be represented at lower resolution (like vanilla). The only concern with battlemaps is if the scale varies a lot over short distances.

Being completely whacky is one thing, but being a realistic FANTASY map is a completely compelling idea . . . . sadly, this isn't one of those

Why (unlike RTS Games) does the player always sees the complete map (the terrain) and doesn't have to explore it, and how will they do this with The New World ?

possibly how they made the latest Civ game, i assume, where you have to explore the darkened region of the map and thereforew push the boundries OF theat map further along
