I have my unit sizes set too where there are 400 + men in each unit. Now I know it's not my computer lagging because it can run any modern game full graphics no problem. Ie:shogun 2. However when I play with 6000 + men in each army and my men approach each other, the animations and everything gets very choppy. It's not a lag but a game engine problem. I am wondering if anyone here has any experience playing with 10000 men on screen like I do, and if your NTW runs it smooth, why does mine get choppy?

I play with big units too. 1125 militia, 820 infantry and 270 cavalry units. I like the epic feel feel of the larger units, although I play 20 stack armies, not 40. Aside from the inability to form square and deploy troops in buildings worth a darn, I don't see too much lag. Are you messing with the graphics options a little too much? I just select "quality" in NVIDIA and let the drivers handle the optimizing. I used to get all kinds of lag and video issues when I messed with them myself.

I am playing with 800 troops per unit at the moment. and i sometimes experience minor lag in graphic Intensive screens such as heavy forest with howitzer shells going off and 3 or 4 stacks marching towards each other. But, its seems to stabilize once my howitzers send a bit of the enemies troops to hell.

What is royally pissing me off however, is the inability to form square. Now here is my question.... In the game files, which file is it that decides the maximum number of units allowed to form square?? does anyone know?

I've been told that is a hard-coded matter; in the game engine. So too is the number of ranks used to form the square sides.

Nap1988- I know what you mean, I experience it as well. I refer to it as 'anim-fps' because it's not really the fps score, but what the animation LOOKS like. So I try different arrangements with large battles and get results like 29-45 FPS and 13-18 anim-fps.

There are theories bouncing around, but the best I saw came from a CA forum member who asserted that it was cpu bottlenecking. Which would naturally explain why it wasn't reflecting accurately in the reported fps.
