adding mercenaries to a faction's roster?

Dear all,

I have been trying to add mercenaries to a roster(for both custom battles and the campaign); without any success. Would anyone be kind enough to tell me how?
ATM, the only thing I've done(in this case) was to try to add Swiss armoured pike men to the french roster via the EDB, but SS 6.4 crashes on start up

any help is appreciated!
