    Default Vassals don't pay tribute

I'm playing as Romans, and I subjugated the Kypchaks and made them my vassals.

Shouldn't I get annual tribute? I get tribute when I have vassals in vanilla MTW2.

    They should do.
Maybe their bankrupt so they can't give you anything as a vassals tribute is half their income.

Good point, I hadn't considered that. I did pretty much annihilate most of their armies, and most of their cities that I take over I exterminated and destroyed most of their buildings for cash. So if I gave them back their regions, they're probably trying to re-build and that's putting them in the red.

PS: one use of the vassals (only works with the 2 seljuks and the kypchaks) is to ressurect them by giving settlements and use them against your far enemies.
e.g. romans vs abbasids/ghurids (seljuks of rum as vassals with regions around mesopotamia and azerbaijan)
It actually wasn't that difficult. I destroyed effectively most of the Kypchaks' armies, and took all but 4 of their provinces. My diplomat had about a 6-7 skill level. I did beat them up pretty effectively, but I didn't have to blockade any ports or devastate their countryside.

I think the biggest reason why they accepted vassalage was because I offered to give them back most of the territories I had taken from them.

I think next time I want to make another faction my vassal, I won't exterminate their cities or destroy their buildings. That way they won't waste so much money re-building, which means they can dedicate more money to paying me tribute.

You're getting money anyway - either by selling their buildings or by receiving tribute. The tribute from a faction receiving a lot of money through a script will probably be greater in the long run than the money you will earn by selling their buildings.
