Default Going back to colour coding soldiers :'( Plz dont :'O

Well ive heard that CA will be going back to its colour coding roots. if anyone doesnt know what it is, it means that all the soldiers will have the same colour to identify which faction is which. i think it is very unrealistic. just take a look at shogun total war 2. the ito looked like a bunch of fairies . i would hate to see a bunch of burgendy coloured germans again, or christmas coloured gauls. so if there is i would hope it is very minimum. i really hated seeing all the mercs in rome wearing green. something that i think would be reasonable would be to have red tunics for the romans but a blue sheild or generals that actually dont have the faction colours. lets be honest, it seems as if each country during ancient times only have two or three different dyes for their clothing. so im begging you please take away colour coding or atleast reduce it to a minimum. thanks

depends on the faction, unit and organisation. mercenaries should have a huge variation in colour and equipment, as well as barbarians.
romans should have this, or a slight change on their uniform.
greek units should have a bit larger variaton, and arabic as barbarians

I believe they would have the same base color, as in able to better identify your troops on the battlefield so you dont have to look around for them to give them an order.

Besides Jack Lusted stated in the Q&A thread that Rome 2 would have the biggest unit diversity in Total War gaming.

They mentioned that every factions will have colours because it would be very confusing to have different units on both sides ... well I agree with them .. Now I am playing roma surrectum 2.5 and when some of the army's are very very mixed its quite confusing to know which unit is yours and which is not .. especialy from birds eye .

It wouldn't be a complete total war experience without color coding. Besides, its not like you have huge brightly colored circles at each mans feet or a sail sized flag above him.. how are you supposed to know who is who!?!

Yeah, you're right. CA should give generals a glowing aura, just in case you don't see them. Make them a lot bigger because they're just too small to see sometimes, along with special abilities that distinguish them from regular units.

    Looks about right.

The main thing is not individual units but if you zoom out and watch a battle you wont be able to recognise the battle line itself because unit colours are too different ..

This is how some battles look like in roma surrectum with various different units .. without clicking on your units tell me where do you think battle line is ?

Agreed. I vote we don't have them all being people. Make some units donkeys and some snakes so that its realistic and people can see the difference.
I will have none of your logic or your realism here sarrr! Confusion in battle you say? Impossible!

On the strategic map I can handle coloured lunacy. But not on the battlefield. On the battlefield uniformed units should be features of nations that fielded them.

i actually like my little dudes wearing my faction colors... its a uniform for gods sake not a dress up party and back then you needed to wear colored uniforms since how are you going to distinguish whos who when you're swinging your sword around??? but since all your allies have the same color if you notice a bit of red to your left obviously you wont slash that way but if you notice a green or other color thats not friendly then you starts hacking in that direction.... well as someone mentioned before ca is doing this differently the color scheme for the troops is going to be the same but different like if romans get red you wont just see one color red but different variations of red plus the accessories like shields, swords, helmets all that is gonna be different... thats what i've heard

CA will not be "going back" to their color-coding, they've always colored-coded in the first place. Even the so-called Medieval II many point to still had color-coding, only the patterns on their shields and armor were different. Empire and Napoleon were color-coded because thats how it was in the times, and Shogun 2 was the worst, bright unrealistic colors for many of the factions.

I don't mind CA color-coding, but at least make the colors realistic. The dull red they show in the screenshots are fine with me really, some more shades should make historians here happy though.

yeah i know that there is going to be colour coding, though i just hope its not like every gaul is red and green, thats waaaaay to far because i would hope you could tell the difference between an unshaven barbarian and a clean clothed roman regular. i would accept something like a common colour that isnt over used, like more soldiers wear brown to identify whos who, because i think that a roman soldier wearing red is easily distinguishable. so roman sheild could have a common colour of red, while their tunics differ in colour.

Colour-coding seems fine, they just need it to be developed more, like multiple shades and more trims.

In MTW2 if you pitched France and Scotland against each other (blue with white trim) you can still quite easily set them apart since one's blue is brighter. I mean you can't really mix them up unless you're new to the game or you're colour blind. At that point you might as well call everyone in BF3 cheating because you're deaf.

"Going back?" Total War has always had "colour coded" units as a design choice. Basically, it's a game and it makes the units more distinguishable on the battlefield; I'm fine with that.

I think that the CA made a good choice on staying with the colors of the units. In that way we can see who is who.

I just didn't liked that the colors were too bright on the battlefield so they can just tone them down a little bit.

But if you have seen the pictures of the Roman and Carthaginian soldiers the CA had gave us you would have seen that the colors aren't such noticeable and don't stab you in the eyes.

Man, some of you just complain to complain. Every faction needs a base color so we can tell them apart easily.

Because faction banner's are not indicating your army properly?
