    Default This is Sparta!

    Hi
im hoping that Sparta will be its own playable faction in the game. I know in rome 1 they were grouped under Greek citys, and in the mod that i play (EB) they are part of a league of cities rather than their own seperate faction.
i think it would be cool if Sparta was its own faction. id love to see my Spartan army take on the Roman Legions. I know that the History buffs probabley wont like the idea of a independant Spartan faction, but from my point of view Sparta should be included as a playable, independant faction.

Arise Sparta...and come back with your shield...or on it!

Why not? you could just refrain from playing that faction. I hate comments like these.

Sparta as a faction =/= lol Uber spartanz 300 lol epic

To the best of my knowledge, Sparta was an independent state, not under the control of anybody. EB created the Koinon Hellenon (Athens, Sparta, Rhodes) because factions were limited.

I am pretty sure Greece will be separated into city states, if I remember what I read correctly.

Sparta was independent until Philopoemen conquest of Sparta in 188BC. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Achaean_League
Here is the 270BC map according to Geacron.

Is your objection to Sparta based on the film 300, or do you have a gameplay/historical reason why they shouldnt be a faction.
just wondering, i know people hate the idea of 300 inspired Spartan units. But im hoping they will be a 'normal' greek faction. Not overdone Hollywood interpretations.

They've already said Greece will be split into multiple factions and heavily implied that Sparta would be one of those factions.

His objection might be led by the title of the thread you've choosen.

If this is not a HINT to anything based on the film 300 then i'm out of arguments.

It really doesn't help when you name the thread after a quote in the movie.....

Gives the first impression you aren't really serious

Would of been better had you just named the thread "sparta playable faction?" or "Independent Greek factions"

Cause naming a thread "THIS IS SPARTA" makes one sound like they simply want them in there cause you've recently watched the movie.....

Certainly doesn't give the impression you legitimately want them for any other reason....

A lot of history buff would be happy if the different league and city state were present.
So you could create your own league lead by Sparta.

Sadly the chance of the Spartans been different than hollywood uber killing machine are weak.

I disagree... Jack Lusted from CA has proved several times that the units are under a quite precise historical oversight ....I wouln't worry about seeing half nacked muscle guys in leather slips and red capes...

Jack did make a specific reference to the reforms of Cleomenes changing the army from a traditional hoplite force to one of phalangites with sarissas. So it would seem that at least one developer knows a bit more about them than what one would get from Hollywood. I'm just wondering where the developers who've taken a peek at a book sometime in their lives were when M2TW was being made.

Sparta did hold out as an independent city state before being absorbed by the Achaian League during this period, but it's days of glory were long past.
    When in doubt, attack.

As many people have said, the Greeks will be represented as different sub-factions if I remember correctly. Perhaps not each city-state but as leagues. In any case Sparta need to be set apart not because of the naked guys of the fantasy movie, but because it had a wildly different political, social and military system from let's say Athens.

They could implement the Achaean League and the Aetolian League, but that would put Athens and Sparta under the same faction. Another option would be to put them all as minor factions but with some kind of diplomatic bonus among them, that is increased in the case of forging intervention on any of them (I. E. Macedon declares war on Athens, then all the city states get a even higher diplomatic bonus among them).

Firstly, I would advise changing the subject heading, the movie "300" is a distraction. But Sparta as a separate faction is conceptually 100% feasible. And in terms of gameplay and "what if" scenarios it is easy to imagine the Spartans successfully regaining their status as a formidable Greek faction. However it would have to be one of the most difficult starting scenarios - maintaining alliances with other greek cities; negotiating loans from the hellenistic empires; and the long term goal of reinvigorating the agoge system which let's face it, is the whole friggin' point of playing this unique faction.

RS II does a great job with its Spartan faction. It is totally feasible and, more importantly, so much fun!

PS I would not mind an "alliance" type faction, that allows Athens and Sparta to work together but with separate "sub faction" mechanics. Don't forget, that the last great greek leader (apart from Philopomen) was Kleomenes. He almost did it.
