Default Rome: Total War Gold CTD (crash to desktop) after 3-4 battles -Win 7 64 bit - Steam install

    Brief specs:

    Win 7 64 bit
    i7 2600k
    corsair vengeance 2 x 4 gb RAM
    GTX 680 graphics
    Acer monitor (@ 120hz)

Rome Total War Gold consistently crashes every 3 or 4 battles on my newly built computer. I have resorted to going on my horrible 32 bit desktop and it runs with no crashes. I have checked everywhere and I can still not find a reason for it crashing. Take note that this installation of Rome is from Steam.

    All help is appreciated.

Brand new computer = have you run Windows Update manually and installed all software options?

Yes, the computer is actually 2 months old. I got Rome Total war on the steam sale recently. Steam downloads all the extensions for you.

Yes, I've had this comp for 2 months now. This was a steam install, and steam usually downloads all the extensions for you (like dirextx)

Yes but updating Windows is up to you, the computer user. Windows' autoupdater is a joke from personal experience.

When I built the computer, I got OEM windows 7 64 bit. OEM basically doesn't come with some features such as windows movie maker, windows media player, etc (I downloaded them myself). What do you suggest I do because I have already done windows update and it still crashes right after clicking continue at the end of the 3rd or 4th battle.

I'm just trying to eliminate possibilities and Windows out of date is a known one. Microsoft seems to have updates foe directx, .Net, and host of other goodies for the core engine, nothing to do with movie maker. I have my Windows Update set to notify and I decide what to install as there are some extra baubles that won't get put on my computer starting with Bing Toolbar.
As well as Rome is optimized, you could also be running out of memory, believe it or not. It does happen.

How could I be running out of memory when I have a full 8gb of it? I honestly do not know why it continues to crash every 3-4 battles.

Rome is a 32bit game and it tops out atr 4gb including graophics vram no matter how much memory you have installed. It's the game, not your system. The game is early XP. Wait for Rome2 and hope for 64bit being included.

Is there anyway to make it stable on 64bit because my friend has an i3 and it doesn't crash. I was wondering if it might be something with my screen resolution? I'm in 1920 x 1080 right now, and I do something different in-game.

The game was made for 1280 x 1024 as standard.
You may try lowering some of the other graphics settings, too. The higher they are, the more ram they use.

I play R:TW mods at 2560x1600 resolution on a system with the following specs

    Core i7 Extreme processor 975(3.33GHz,8MB L2 cache,6.4GT/sec)
    6144MB (3 x 2048) 1067MHz DDR3 Tri-Channel
    EVGA GTX670
Windows 7 Pro 64 bit OS

I play with maxed out graphics.

I don't get CTDs after a certain number of battles. As irishron has mentioned crashes after a period will either be caused by 1) Memory Leak 2) Overheating graphics card or system.

We can't let you know how to work around the 1st one but there are ways. Look it up using Google.

I don't want to muddy the waters here but it could help to know what the destination folder is for your Steam install of R:TW. As you report it apparently works on an older 32-bit system but doesn't work on a (presumably) newer system that may be running 64-bit. That's the odd man out here.

Your problem may be solved by redirecting the install to something other than the [Program Files (x86)] folder. This game is old enough that it may not like the install path you're directing it to. Good luck!

I've got Steam installed into my own folder and have not used the default program files folders for a very long time (3 or 4 years).

    I FOUND A FIX.

I found out that I had some memory leaks while running Rome Total war. So to prevent them, I downloaded the application RAMBOOSTER. It runs at startup and is very easy to customize. I recommend everybody try this is they're having the problem I had. Thanks for all your help guys.
