    Default Borders

I hope borders (like in shogun 2) will be included in Rome 2. By borders I mean AI can't enter my lands without my permission or only if we're at war with each other.

In Rome 1, the AI would sending numerous amount of troops into my land and they would stand idle in my territories impeding the movement of mine even if I wasn't at war with them.

I remember when the ai would send a full stack into my territory and I would be forced to counter with sending a full stack of mine to tailgate theirs in case they attack, because declaring war on an army that was marching through your lands without your permission would consider you the warmonger.

So what do you think. on a map as big as rome 2, open or closed borders.

The one thing I don't like about that system is that you can't even take a small detour through the remote areas of neighboring regions without declaring war. Back then borders were not as well defined and smaller populations coupled with less development mean that you should be able to at least take a detour over neighboring lands without war or access.

Mind you, something needs to be done to stop neutral AI fullstacks from just setting up camp outside your city and never ever leaving - that is just stupid. Perhaps there can be penalties for prolonged time spent in neighboring regions or for coming too close to developed areas. They could halt your army at a certain point and have a message box appear saying that your presence near a given region has not been well-received, and they have sent emissaries asking you to turn back. Then you can either change course or ignore them, at the risk of major relations penalties and often war.

yea definetly closed like shogun 2 though i would like to see it done like in fots when the border disappears if its yours and only shows when is a shared border instead of having it show in every province (dunno if im explaining right )

Although I have never played Rome II I would love to see this.

I think that in Rome I or maybe MTW 2 was an option to military access, so you send the diplomat and asked military access for I don't know 2-3 turns which is enough time to make your army pass trough the territory without rising any suspicions or ever lurking to war.

They could however add that the AI is aware of your presence for this few turns they give you access. They can make that the AI is showing its awareness with recruiting more troops to garrison their cities in any case that you would attack or something like that.

Me neither bro, but I would really like to see this implemented. The old system of them just standing around your cities often caused me to bribe smaller forces or plant my own armies right near there full stacks. At the least, I would like to have a diplomacy option to tell them to gtfo, or face consequences.
And if by some round a bout way this stays the same, I would like to see them pay you to stay (as the army isn't pillaging, and I doubt they have baggage trains running through my armed cities and country).

I don't want to see bordersmin Rome 2. I prefer armies marching wherever they want to and ,most importantly, their motives to be hidden. In shogun 2, i did not like the concept "touch my land-instantly declare war"

I meant Shogun II, I edited it. Sorry.

I agree. In Rome I only the AI could do this. If you remember there would appear a message with the title interrogation or suspicious or something like that with that whipping sound when you opened it.

So I would also like that you could warn the enemy to get out of your lands.

An idea, keep the border system but change it a bit. When you or an ai moves an army into a territory that military access has not been granted for, so long as you aren't seen by the enemy, nothing happens to relations. If you are found, the owner of the land can have a choice between declaring war or letting it slide. Letting it slide will reduce prestige of the owner nation as it shows cowardice and for the offender nation you take a moderate infamy sticker that reduces diplomatic relations with all factions for a few turns. this could work couldn't it?

hehe no problems with the Rome II mistype. Definitely would enjoy seeing this option as it was AI exclusive, and bugged me that I had to gauge if I could cross an area in two turns without causing a needless war.

I hate armies that camp my settlements, I just skip waiting around and fight them out, no sense playing dumb, it's what's gonna happen anyways.
About the diplomacy side thread in here I'd just like to see a diplomacy system with real consequences(yes I will keep dreaming, thank you). If you only get attacked and retaliate you have a good standing, the AI should be more ready to trust/accept proposals. Within reason of course, there's a difference between accepting and stupidity. Military access should not be free and only if you got attacked by a country and to get to said country you have to go through an ally's lands. Now if you're permanently an aggressor in no instances would the AI accept you. I'd be wary of the guy trying to sweeten the deal with looted cash.
It might be my coffers he uses to sweeten a deal for someone else next.

With ZoC I don't see neutral armies marching up to settlements so easily but it would be nice if enemy armies are in your lands and in your ZoC they DoW but otherwise then can march through. However if enemy ends turn in your territory (not just march through) they get a warning. If enemy army remains in your lands for a further turn there is a diplomatic penalty not only with lands they occupy but all nearby factions who now wonder if their own borders are safe. 3rd turn of camping the factions whose lands are invaded can DoW without risk of the invaders allies getting involved at least immediately.

The closed border thing was fit for Empire and Napoleon, but for any other game I am not so sure.

It adds a new strategic level, though. You have to plan how far it will take you to reach enemy city once you declare war, which is heavily affected with seasons. Same applies to enemy, because you have to guess how far the border is from city and how far enemy will march.
