Why do people call Rome 'an ancient civilization'?

From dictionary.com, I think you're not entirely aware of what ancient means. As far as I can see from the meanings of the word ancient civilisation covers it nicely and has nothing whatsoever to do with being more or less advanced.

They call it ancient because it was a long time ago, it doesn't matter whether or not they had good technology or not. Although Romans still should not be called an "ancient" civilization, it should be called a Classical civilization, since it existed during classical antiquity. My definition of ancient would be ancient Greece, or Egypt or Mesopotamia.

Take my advice OP, people are ignorant, but it doesn't mean they're bad people. Calling Rome an ancient civilization is not really a big deal.

In some ways the Romans were more advanced; in some ways they were less advanced. But it's not ignorant to say that they were more advanced, because in many ways they were.

As others have said, ancient refers to time period. It has nothing to do with technology, and I don't know why it would.

He doesn't necessarily mean technologically, it could also mean culturally. The Romans were more advanced in some ways such as they accepted gay people more and they weren't as sexually repressed by religion (cough, Christianity).

although i'd agree about dark ages, im sure they had rediscovered and improved most ancient inventions by medieval times. it was only "dark" in europe, in the middle east it was "golden"
