I've been wondering about that for quite some time but never actually mentioned it on the forums. So, maybe I'm not the only one who had noticed the Eastern European castles being smaller than others, is there any reason for it?

It is because people in Eastern Europe were smaller then in Western Europe, so they didn't need as much space. This is due to the short supply of beer and mead to the Eastern parts of Europe during that time period.
As far as I recall, Slavs were rather big compared to petty Western Europeans due to harsher lives (never-ending wars and stuff) and having to work in fields more. As for booze, I don't think I should talk about the lack of it in the context of Slavs and particularly Russians as the answer seems to be ridiculously obvious.
Also, it used to be generally colder in eastern Europe in medieval times. They built smaller castles there so they would not need so much energy to heat them in the winter. As a consequence, they did not need to haul in so much wood in the autumn.
Also the Eastern European castles are farther away, making them appear smaller.

Also the Western Europeans had special defensive tactics as it can clearly be seen in this documentary:
Those replies are hilarious (really), but maybe someone gives a serious answer?
It was because people in the east never had the same pressures to build the type of huge elaborate castles you see in the west.
Please rep me for my posts, not for the fact that i have a Pony as an Avatar.
Cause bigger always = better. Thats western philosophy as I understand it![]()
People built catle according to the size of their man-part, it is cleary thatn Eastern European in the middleages has a smaller one
Sorry, but you got it all wrong. It was the opposite.
Western-European Lords wanted to compensate themselves their shortcomings. So the Western Ladies could tell them “Oh My Lord, what a big castle you have there”, and so he could reply “Yes, I know” and could feel appreciated.![]()
you funny guys

Adevăratele înfrângeri,
sunt renunţările la vis.
Serious answer: The models just happen to be smaller. No idea why, but they just are.
This is discussion was going way offtopic - re-opened, stick to the topic please.

Similarly, why are Byzantine watchtowers so big?
Is there an easy way to change their size? I don't like putting up a watchtower and having it take up half the region.
Really like the west-Europe watchtowers... wish we could garrison a couple untis in those things. You know not like a fort (where you can inexplicably put 20 units, where it can visually only comfortably maintain 2-3) and then make it look like a mott & baily or something on the battle map?
