News had been circulating in Lucca and surrounding provinces of a dispute within the Italian county involving the recent death of Count Alberto Chiavaroli, a noble Italian who had ruled the county for several decades. His sudden demise resulted in a dispute involving his two sons, Cesare and Salvator, on who would succeed their father. However, a revolt appeared under the banners of their Uncle, Lothario Chiavaroli who killed his nephews in open combat and installed himself as ruler of Lucca. A tyrant he was and thus no love from the people came to him. Thus the citizens of Lucca looked to the nearby and noble Otto von Welf, Count of Firenze for help.
On an auspicious day, a letter arrives at the courts of Otto. The messenger claims to be a loyal servant of the late Count Alberto who has come on behalf of the people of Lucca, seeking aid and the enlightened rule of Count von Welf.
The messenger, who was named Cosimo, remained on his knees, keeping his face towards the ground.
We beseech you, Count von Welf...please liberate our lands from Lothario and we will serve you as loyal and peaceful servants...just as we did under Count Alberto's noble reign.
