Default This game is currently unavailable (Application running) - STEAM problem

As it says in the title. MTW2 nor Kingdoms starts. I tried a custom launcher after the first time I got this error and it launched the game. Once. After that, same thing. I have reinstalled both games, booted steam and naturally booted the machine. No luck.

The annoying part is that there is no mtw2.exe or launcher.exe or any other TW-related .exe in the task manager's list of open processes. And unlike some other people who get this "the program is still running you , close it off" -error, I can actually shut down steam.

So understandably I am somewhat puzzled. The STEAM forums being what they are, I'll rather ask for help here if you dont mind.

Delete the clientregistry.blob, then try it.

    Try verifying the game cache.

Well cache verification didnt work (as I expected) like the reinstallation didnt. Testing the blob-trick now.

EDIT: Nope, deleting cluentregistry.blob did not work. The game starts once and after that the error returns.

What OS are you running currently? I'll assume Win7 for the moment...

I'll also assume you've looked at these threads -

Have you disabled the UAC? Are you trying to run in Compatibility Mode? Have you installed all the latest drivers? Again I'll assume you have and will move on to the more outre problems I could find....

What custom installer did you use? That may be where this problem lies. Also - did you clean out your Reg files after your attempt to use whatever custom installer you used?

What version of DirectX are you running on that system? Sometimes in the past it's been necessary to download the DX9.0C codec for M2 and Kingdoms. Is that something you've tried?

Lastly looking at some threads for this error OpenGL has been listed as a problem. But as M2 doesn't use it you should be fine there. Good luck!

Running Win7 64bit, I did check those out. UAC is off by default, I went through the steam re-updating itself steps and I'm not running Steam on compability mode, nor mtw2. The drivers up to date as far as I know. I did not instal the game itself through any third party program. I installed it normally through steam. The launcher I'm talking about is just a replacement for the mtw2 launcher. Having it made no difference. And finally, I have directX from 9.0c through 10 to 11 installed.

A slight update, it appears now that simply restarting steam fixes this problem until I start mtw2 again (which is something it did not do earlier). This is almost as odd as chasing this one performance bug a year ago in Roma Surrectum II.

Remember what you did for RS@ and apply it to Medieval2. It's the same basic game engine.

I dislike the launcher but I will have to learn how when my Kingdoms disc dies.
