Default How do you think Civil Wars will work in Rome 2

In Rome I, the Civil War was started basically by one of the Roman families attacking another or the SPQR, and in ETW, it was when your capital's population was angry. However as Rome is now going to be 1 faction, and ETW's civil war system seems a bit too simple for it, how do you think it will work.

I think it should be instigated by specific generals, if one of your generals is very successful on the field (and since legions are apparently going to be somewhat individualized, they might become more loyal to the general than to the state) he will be able to declare his intentions to become Dictator/Emperor/etc and march on Rome.

You either choose to control his army, as they march their way to Rome, or choose to send loyal legions against him. If you do choose to rebel, he will automatically get a boost in troop numbers (maybe if in-game a cohort is going to be 160 as usual, they will be boosted to first cohort numbers of like 250) and have to face two or three armies on his way to Rome, therefore wearing out your army before a final battle, if you make it past the Rubicon, and defeat the final army, that general claims dictatorship.

It'll basically be the same for if you choose to be loyal to the state, except you'll have to fight against more experienced forces than the armies the script will give to you, making crushing the rebels a challenge.

Most likely a system trigger much similar to the Realm Divide in Shogun 2...........

So basically, if your faction and generals act on "imperialist" behavior such expanding lands to the point where it becomes out of the Senate's control, or inciting public rebellion of the plebs and slaves... something like that. Oh, and also, like you said, you may be able to decide at the point of "Civil Divide" if you want to bring legions into Italy or not as a final trigger for the Civil War..

But heck, how can we know exactly how it will work......... but one thing that is pretty certain is that we can expect Civil War as a feature in Rome 2

I envision one way is to have Rome operate with RTW's Senate mechanic- you lose enough favour you get booted out and branded an outlaw. You will then have to march on Rome who will deploy armies to take you out wherever you've expanded. If your popularity is also low then you're screwed because of happiness penalties and a Barons' Revolt-style rebellion where revolting settlements join the Senate. If however your popularity was very high then the people will side with you and the Senate in turn suffers instability, eventually being ejected from Rome and becoming a typical rebel army. They may have an easy time taking your less-defended settlements, but their unpopularity will mean they are in tough times until you destroy them.

I mean that is kind of how the civil war occurred- Julius Caesar was basically accused of all manner of things, and his crossing the Rubicon didn't create shocks of disapproval among the people because he was seen as a hero. If the player has the plebs' support, then attacking the Senate won't result in excommunication- naturally, the Roman player would want to shore up support between both senate and plebs before making the coup d'etat. Being branded an outlaw by both parties would be the worst thing to happen.

In the Roman case you could even have just your legions follow you and be like a horde in BI. Since the rebel generals usually had jsut their legions, not whole settlements. You could capture those on your way to Rome and if you take it, most of the settlements would join you, but not all.

Probably a more complex version of Empire's civil war system. Maybe, you could have a way for when a REALLY good general gets a bit too cocky, you can have him rebel when he enters Rome and side with him, or fight him, afterwards, you could have several other generals also fight him from all corners of your territory. You could have a sort of loyalty system measuring the loyalty of the units to the state, or to the generals, adn the individual lesser generals' loyalty to the greater ones to determine who sides with whom. For example, the Legions and units that a General has served with for years on a campaign will ALWAYS be his, however, if you constantly give him control of huge armies, and he takes over vast swaths of land that he manages to earn the loyalty of, expect him to rebel, if he wins, expect further troubles with the other generals who are not loyal to him. I'm still trying to figure out how oyu can resolve this issue without having half your army dead at the end though.
