Default A Corsican Problem (Event for Swayze)

A rider comes into the town square of Genoa. He looks clearly lost at the different city, almost foreign to him. He nods to the 10 men behind him to follow.

He approaches a man standing in the square. Without bothering to dismount, he calls out to him in a loud voice.

“Scuz mein, Vayr ist the Governor?”

The man hearing the accent turns around smirking at the accent but falters at the sight of 10 heavily armoured riders behind the man.

    “Over there, Signore.”
He says, pointing to the building on the hill.

The rider enters the manor. He has a letter from Nassau, for the Governor.

    Letter for Governor Toddric Greetings,

The Kaiser has a task for you. There is a man in Corsica, a Mayor and Governor of sorts. He is rousing trouble against us for overthrowing our rule. He is already fancies himself as the King of the newly established Kingdom of Corsica. The Kaiser deems that such an action would not be prudent for the people, as they would be easy targets for other powers. What the man obviously fails to understand is that the protection comes from the Reich, and not outside.

The man’s name is Raphael DeFiore. Prior to this letter, the man has been responding to our warnings with impertinence. How you deal with him, whether you reason with him, or threaten him, or silence him forever him, is up to you. For your personal safety, the Kaiser has sent 10 Gothic Knights as your guards. Rest assured they are well apt to taking on 10 men apiece, and it is very unlikely that he would have a professionally trained army. I suggest you sail with the next ship to Corsica.

    - Giovanni Anderlini

    Chancellor of the Empire

Toddric looks over the letter, pauses for several moments upon reading it, and speaks

Abel. Ready my ship. We sail for Corsica in one week's time.

Toddric walks out of the room

    (TIMEWARP - 1 week)

The ship has set sail for Corsica...

Governor Toddric Ramsey - armed with his seven-flanged mace, concealed in his spectacular silk robe, and his slash-resistant leather gauntlets
Abel Ramsey, his cousin (aux), and personal bodyguard,
The 10 Gothic Knight's entrusted to him, by the Emperor,

The governor brought a proclamation for the Corsican man to sign.

    Dawn

The lighthouse of Bastia are in sight. It is likely that the man is here. However, he would not be expecting visitors. It would be safe to dock at Bastia.

The ship docks at dawn, and Governor Ramsey, his bodyguard, and 10 Gothic Knights leave
the ship for the Lighthouse, at Bastia. They march to meet the Governor of Corsica, and Toddric
holds an official Imperial document to be signed by the Governor

The town was just stirring to life. People looked curiously at the group. Children following them, evidently amused. A large Manor was visible at a short distance, overlooking the sea.

OOC: You don't have to mention Guards and the Document, I remember.

Toddric Ramsey smiles and waves to the occasional local who passes by them, ensuring to keep himself courteous so far from home...

Abel points to the Manor ahead, marked by the Corsican flag, the Imperial Governor's Manse, he presumes. Toddric, and his retinue approach the manse

The lookers merely started guffawing. Perhaps they found this extremely entertaining.

At the open gates of the manor, the guard was not amused. He kept watching the entourage with narrowed eyes, wondering what business on earth could they have.

Good day, good man.. We have been blessed with a beautiful sunny day... I have Imperial business with the Governor... Directly from the Office of the Kaiser.

Now definitely alarmed, the guard grips the sword on his side.
    And what business is that?

    Abel smiles, grips his sword

You might want to remove your hand from that hilt, guard. This is an Imperial visit ordered by the Office of the Kaiser, and this is Governor Toddric Ramsey, of the Imperial City State of Genoa. Show some respect to him.

Toddric puts his hand on his cousin's shoulder to quiet him

Forgive my cousin, he is a bit hotheaded if you will..

I am Governor of Genoa.. I have been ordered by the Kaiser to represent the Kaiser. Business is that of our own, however. That is all your position entitles you to know. Bring what escort you need with us, but I am to speak with the Governor.. That's non-negotiable, good man.. Please escort me directly to the Governor.
Toddric tried to be as polite as possible over the current situation

The Sergeant of the Knights gives you a sideways glance, to silently indicate that he is ready to pounce, at the slightest provocation or your command. Indeed, it appears that one swipe is enough to knock him unconscious.

The watchman however pulls out his sword.
Representing the Kaiser is it? With a group of thugs? I will not ask again.
Who are you? State your purpose!

Abel backs up two steps and draws his sword halfway out prepared to draw it fully

Toddric gives him a quick glance and shakes his head to give a slight no

I have told you who I am. I am Toddric Ramsey, Imperial Governor of Genoa. Put your sword away, good man. I do not come baring tides of violence against Governor DeFiore... As I stated once.. It is Imperial business. It is meant only for the ears of the Governor himself, that is Imperial custom. If you could hastily present us before the Governor, it would be most appreciated. We are guests to your island, it would be wise to honor that, good man. Incurring the wrath of the Kaiser, would coincide with incurring the wrath of the Pope, as well.. Surely you do not mean to slight the Church, as well?

Take me to Governor DeFeore.. This is the last time I will ask, good man. You are halting Imperial business. An assault on the Kaiser's Imperial representative is the same as an assault on the Kaiser himself. Surely you don't want to be blamed for that. Take me to the Governor.

Slowly, the man lowers the sword. Still watching them wearily, he nods at them to enter the manor grounds.
I am not allowed to shift from my post. The footman will answer you at the door.

    Toddric nods his approval

Thank you, good man. He motions his cousin, and bodyguards to follow suit

They arrive at the front doors, before another guardsman

Greetings, soldier. I have been permitted access to the grounds to speak with Governor DeFeore, on behalf of the Kaiser himself. It is of the utmost in importance to the Empire. I require an immediate audience, good man.

    The footman raises an eyebrow.
And is my lord expecting you? From the looks of it, no. And who are these eleven people? I can escort only you inside, they have to wait outside.
    Agreed?

The Sergeant again gives a half glance.

Certainly not, soldier. This isn't a situation for you to dictate. These are my bodyguards, in an unfamiliar land, of which the Empire has been questioning of late. They will be admitted entrance into the manse, along with myself. I will speak alone with the Governor, as my men will stand outside of his chambers... However the doors will remained open, out of earshot of our conversation.

I come speaking on behalf of the Kaiser himself.. Clearly you would not want to be subject to the discretion of the Kaiser in such an event as preventing his royal representative, of which was dispatched as the mediator for Corsica, and the Empire...

To put it simple, I am representing the Office of the Kaiser. I will not have dictated to me whom I can, and cannot have as my person entourage.. Surely there are numerous more soldiers on these grounds then that in which I possess. I would do nothing foolish of which you might strike suspicion, as I am here representing the interests of OUR Kaiser, soldier. Our Kaiser.

I would advise you to grant my retinue, and I, into this mansion, you may come along for the walk if you wish. I do not have time for trivial games however, and this is non-negotiable.
    Toddric hastily awaits a response..

Clearly, not understanding a word of it, the footman nods to some 5 guards sitting not far away, chatting. The stand up and come closer, talking in nervously at the gleaming armour of the strangers.
I am not getting what you wheezing about, but the answer is no. I cannot permit the lumbering pack inside. However, you can maybe bring two of them inside. Decide now.

6 will remain outside, as well as my cousin here, and these 4 will come with me. (He points the 4 best gothic knights to accompany him). That is the compromise I will make. A man of my position does not stray far from his protection. And with recent reports of the governing of this island, the Kaiser feels the governor shall answer some questions. These 4 will be coming with me, soldier. That's non-negotiable, consider it lucky I allow the other 6 not to. Now take me, and whatever men you need to visit the Governor's office. Keep in mind you are treading hot water in any sort of defiance, as I am a representative of the Kaiser himself. Toddric humbly points for the soldier to lead them to the Governor's chambers

The Sergeant nods appreciatively, as if he and his best 3 men are sufficient.

The footman however, shoots a contemptuous look.
I know not of any authority of the Kaiser. I know only one, that of my Padrone DeFiore. Very well, I shall take you and four of these suits of armour.

One of the five guards speaks in a sneering voice.
    Take of your armour precious.

The footman replies with a snort.
No need! That will take the whole day. However, you four suits, hand over your swords and shields. Now.
Now follow me, and don't wander off.

There will be no handing over of any weapons. Again with being defiant. If Kaiser Alexander himself was here... You would not have that tone of voice, I assure you. Keep in mind Corsica is a province of the Holy Roman Empire... I have been dispatched directly by the Kaiser to speak with Governor DeFeore. So these knights will keep their weapons. You have the option however of trying to take their weapons, but I'm sure you'd like to go home to your wife and children tonight, sergeant, so I wouldn't advise it... Again... If that is the option you take, an assault on me, or any of my retinue here is the same as an assault on the Emperor himself. I don't think you grasp the reprecautions that would come with that... And I'm sure Governor DeFeore does not want that kind of enemy... Keep in mind the Kaiser is favored greatly by the Pope, himself..

So this is how it will go... You will take these men of yours, I will take these men of mine, we will go to the Governor's chambers, I will go in alone with him while you wait with my friends here. There is no other way this is unfolding. These 4 will accompany me, but I'm quite sure just one of these highly trained knights could dispatch two dozen of your finest, but we're not here to test bravado and strength, sergeant, we're here to talk, and that's what I intend to do. So for the last time, they take with them what they currently have, and as long as you and your men keep your weapons in their scabbards, you need not worry.

Keep that in mind. I shall talk to the governor alone, you and your men may wait outside, with mine, doors open, just out of earshot.
Toddric nods and motions for the sergeant to proceed and lead him to the governor
