When i attempt to run mediaval2.exe the cursor changes to a spinning disc and a black box appears over a portion of the screen followed by the message "medieval 2: total war has encountered an unspecified problem and will now close"

im running an hdmi cable to hdtv, could this be the problem?
I've tried reinstalling and my directx and drivers are up to date.

both empire and rome total war run fine on my current system.

This bit leads me to think that you have a bad install of the game if you're missing your preferences file and the keys.dat files. Try uninstalling it, clean out any old Reg calls and try reinstalling it.

Do you own the discs or is this a download?

Unfortunately you didn't post your full DX log. Do you have any disk imaging software on that system? Daemon tools, MagicISO or the like? That may trip up the DRM and interfere with the installation. The version of SecuROM that seems to have shipped with the discs was pretty brutal about classifying those programs as pirate software so that may be your fault point if you have physical discs.

    Good luck!

Moved from M2 GD to M2 Tech

Steam version? Verify the game cache.

    Disc version? Post your dxdiag.
