Rome Total War Gold Edition Crash - Error Report - Need help!

Hello thanks for looking. I've done some research on this crash I have, but am unsure if I've done all I can.

First off, I bought the game and downloaded it from a site called Gamersgate.

I started a campaign and everything worked fine. The first sign of trouble was well into the campaign, when I hit end of turn, all the factions did their thing, and right before it came to me, I got the "RomeTW.exe has encountered a problem and must shutdown, sorry for the inconvenience". Thankfully, it autosaved, although I don't think I have autosave necessarily turned on, do I? I guess I didn't even know if it was an option. I read that it's recommended to not have autosave or quicksave turned on.

Anyways, I kept on playing for days, and it happened a few more times, but every time I'd just restart RTW and pick up where I left off. However, today it really hit the fan. The crash happened, so I closed out, and restarted. I went to keep playing and it crashed again. Now, I can't even get into the campaign. RTW starts fine, I go to "Continue Campaign", I hear the GONG!!!, I hear the music start to play, it says "Summer 107 BC", and right before I would see the map appear, it's a crash report every time.

The "more details" of the crash report had this:

I read to delete a file called map.rwm, and I did so, but the crash still happens.

Am I out of luck? Do I have to reinstall the game? Can I possibly save this campaign even if i reinstall the program? Will a patch help? I'm pretty deep into this game and it's starting to heat up, it'd be a if I had to abandon it.

Odds are it's a corrupted save, the bane of total War games.

If you can start a new campaign, it is.

In the Options page, what is the version number?

I went to the options page, but didn't see anything about a version number, just audio and video settings.

A corrupted save sounds plausible as far as this latest round of crashes, but what about the other ones that would happen mid-play? It was the same crash too.

In the options the version it on corner of the screen!

have you patched it before?
If not then your version is 1.0!

I forget which corner but even 1.o shows up.

I haven't patched it yet.. do the patches fix crashes like this?

Okay, update. I patched to version 1.2. However, I'm thinking I shouldn't have done that based on the result.

Like I said earlier, I bought the game online and downloaded it. Now, when I click on the RTW icon, it asks for the CD. Did I use the wrong patch? Do patches assume it's a CD Rom game?

For Rome TW Gold (I assume together with BI) the last patch if RTW 1.5 and BI 1.6

If you only have Rome and not BI then you must look for patch 1.3 then patch 1.5

If you have both then look for BI patch 1.6 straight away and does not need previous patches.

Sorry for being so "needy", just want some expert opinion.

I'm guessing the dream of recapturing this campaign may be gone. Here is the latest update:

1. After applying patch 1.2, Rome Total War asks for a CD even though I downloaded the full game.

2. If I try to apply patch 1.3, it says there is no Rome Total War application found

3. If I try Barbarian Invasion, the game starts, but instantly i'm told "Error loading mount database"

Ugh, it appears I'm stuck, any suggestions?

It looks like the downloadable game from Gamersgate should be the most recent version - so R:TW 1.5 and R:TW BI 1.6.

When did you pay for the download?

You did not report back as to what version the game was before you messed around with patching. I doubt very much if the game does not show the version number on the top right hand side of the options menu.

The 'error loading mount database' is usually shown when there is a bad install of R:TW BI.

Yes, you guys were indeed correct, there WAS a version number on that options screen, it's 1.5

I ended up re-installing RTW. I saved my save points, but the one won't work, so it was probably just a bad save.

However, I recently modded to Rise of Persia, am getting into a campaign, and once again, I'm getting the crash of RomeTW.exe must shut down. I know it's not a save, because I'll be playing for hours, and then it just suddenly happens. Are there any ways to combat this from happening?

As for when I paid for the download, it was just a few weeks ago.

Simple rules for installing R:TW on a Vista/Windows 7 PC.

1) turn off UAC (before you install)
2) install to your own games folder which you can create (Windows can do strange things with the program files folders).
