Rome Total War Gold Crash - Windows 7 64 bit

Ive recently installed the game via steam and updated to the latest version. Whenever i try to start the game the screen goes black, then crashes to desktop. The message that rome total war has stopped responding is then shown. Ive run out of ideas on how to fix this, ive tried:

• Reinstalling the game
• Reinstalling steam
• Updating windows
• Updating all graphics/sound drivers
• Running the game in xp compatibility mode
• Running as admin

Im out of ideas, so if any body can think of a way to fix this it would be much appreciated.

Have you tried 1280 x 1024 monitor resolution?
