    Default Forest effect on game.

What is the difference when gunning in the forest and between the forest?

Scenario 1, shooting within the forest to enemy outside in plain.

Scenario 2, shooting while forest is blocking view, but both are not in forest.

Scenario 3, shooting an enemy in the forest from the outside plain.

    I searched already but..cant find.

I'm just guessing but I believe the only thing that matters is whether the game considers the target to be in a forest or not. If yes, projectile lethality is somehow negatively affected. At least mangonels and fire bomb throwers can also have trees block their projectiles.

I think forests affect the artillery and cavalry. Everyone else still gets hit by all other projectiles, I believe.

I believe that units in forests have an advantage: When I play on hard and have my oda bow ashigaru shoot from the plains into a bow ashigaru unit they will only kill about 2 or 3, much lower than usual. While the enemy will kill slightly more of my units when they return fire. After letting them shoot for a while my men suffered more casualties, despite having slightly higher stats.

But of course, easiest way to discover for real would be testing!

Actually im pretty sure its facr placing troops in forest dose help reduced casulties from ranged attacks I think its been this way since rome and as others said trees can block cannon or catapult shots(cant remember the correct name and im to lazy to look ) and it dose help infanty agains cavalry due to thight spaces in rhe forest breaking up the cav unit's formation and I think forest might also slow cav down also but im not sure bout that one but lord knows trees are the bane of my existance when doing maual control of cannons
    dose it matter?

    Ballista.

There are videos on YT of results of arrow fire vs men in trees vs men not in trees. In trees they will sustain minimal casualties and the enemy will run out of arrows. Without cover they will run out of men and the enemy will have more arrows than men you have left!

A unit in the trees is much more resistant to arrow fire, I'm less sure about gunfire. There is no penalty as far as I know for shooting from a forested area at units in open ground. Cavalry receive movement and combat penalties while in forested areas. The combat penalties are significant but not crippling. Katana cavalry will still beat archers, but may have trouble with katana infantry.

I have to say that sometimes i get quite annoyed when my forest covered archers take as much hits as the enemy archer in the plains. (this happened to me in my current Rise of the samurai campaign). That it was hard difficulty played a big part in it i think

Dont tell fire rockets to shoot in the forest... they probably blow themselves up

Forest trees have the ability to block projectiles and make your units LOS crappy. That is why missile units in trees always win vs in open field

on a lighter note i think standing behind a row of trees may reduce casualties so long as the other opponent is position in the opposite direction of the trees (without cover too) but not sure. I had a battle where my matchlocks were having a hard time shooting over trees even though his units weren't in cover and I wasn't under the tree too.

Trees stop bullets, bombs, rockets, cannon balls, numes, ships, men, birds, deer, etc. so the trees in this game are really really hard wood trees. So being in trees is supperior then not because units in trees do not seem to be effected as much by trees blocking fireing path.
For example PPCLI firing at infanterie de marine, the infanterie de marine are in the trees and inflict more losses to the PPCLI evan though the PPCLI have higher stats.
Another example tekidanto samurai shooting at assault infantry with assault infantry in the forest, the tekidanto samurai take higher losses. Due to there grenades mostly hitting trees and the shotguns hitting the tekidanto samurai though sibces there very bullet resistant id didnt do much damage to them.
    My mods
-Mod Leader for the Wheel Of Time This is not the beginning, but it is a beginning
-Mod Leader for Shogun 2: Foreign Invasion if you want a mod with alot of units this is for you, not only is there the 40 units CA made theres planned to be atleast 177 NEW units when its done.
-Modder in the World War I and Shogun II project. The only full scale mod for FOTS and it plays nothing like FOTS. FOTS may have Gatling guns, WW1&S2 has tekidanto samurai, SNLF, MGs, kisho snipers, assault infantry(shotguns) just to name a few.

In short projectiles block things going into a forest, and men and horses are slowed down.

if forests block arrows then why don't i ever see arrows stick in trees the way they do walls, ships, and the ground?

CA's smart about conservation of detail. You see what you need to see.
