Hope they're better than the usual tripe on the history channel, if you believed half the programmes on there hitler had flying saucers and every great structure the human race built in ancient times was done by aliens. That channel has a cheek sometimes to be called the "history channel" - thanks for the links anyway i will save them and check out later![]()

Ill agree to some extent that History channel is now what MTV used to be for music television. I miss the war documentaries but what can you do.
People seem to think that since now HC have only commercial realities crap, it suddenly invalidates all the past programming they broadcast for several years before.

clicked on the links and saved them in case this gets closed. if you have a rep with "n/a" next to it, it was me for this.
Not i, i know they have some good documentary stuff but really just had to get it out there that they are becoming a laughing stock full of conspiracy nonsense filled with far fetched documentaries that always seem to contain that weird charlatan guy with the beard talking about aliens did this aliens did that. I mean whats that guys expertise? i could run around saying aliens built the pyramids and anything remotely difficult back then also :O

I know, I know... but if you even dare to point out a old Roman documentary here you will be pointed out as a ignorant idiot loon... I find that laughable. Because let's face it, most of us don't take heavy books and specialize in Roman history as many people here claim to do, instead learning general stuff from documentaries and such, that are bound to be based on actual research too.
But Jupiter protects you if you dare to say you saw something in a documentary, because a bunch of History PHD's will rush at you asking for irrefutable prove you are right, because they are short of having traveled in time and watch history with their own eyes. And yes, they all have read all the books and authors from Rome.
Just my two cents about the general situation on the forums.
Of course, academic research is a higher fountain of knowledge than the condensed version a 25 minutes documentary can give you, but that doesn't mean that everything a documentary say is wrong therefore I'm on a higher ground both morally and intellectually than you BS attitude a lot of people have here is right.
Me? I'm simply an IT guy that happens to like history. I haven't read a lot of authors and most things I know are vague remembers of a lot of reading at encyclopedias in my childhood and some internet academic paper from time to time mostly if pointed out to it.

Spartans were sick pederastic totalitarians who probably held Greece back: they were far worse than the Romans, way worse than the "evil" Persians they fought. I don't understand why they're worshiped by popular culture today, or even included in some weird definition of "western culture".

Haven't you see the movie 300, it totally rocks! And it's totally based on real facts, so it's like you are learning stuff about Greece too

Ancient Aliens was a good show, if you took it for what it was. I actually watched a podcast with that guy, he isn't that bad.
