Default GeForce 600 series or wait for the future

I bought a GTX 580 last year for my first gaming rig and have been very satisfied with it's performance. But it's temps have made me a little uneasy recently and I wanted to know if it was true that something from the 600 series actually had better performance and was cooler that the 580. Or should I just be patient and wait for the next big line up from developers?

Also anyone have a suggestion for a nice monitor? I'm still using a dell that was left over when I upgraded.

My 580 has no heating issues, just do what im going to do and wait for 780, no need to blow another 500 bucks so soon.

wait for 7xx Nvidia and 8xxx AMD.

These cards were completely overpriced for the performance gains. That goes for AMD and nvidia on the newest series.

We should see a similar increase in performance on the next series so going from 5xx or 6xxx (in my case) to 7xx or 8xxx will probably net you 50 to 100% increase for about the same price. I dont know what either company was thinking selling single GPU solutions for 550 and 600 dollars on release. Although nvidia was still selling 580s for 500 to 600 dollars on newegg after the 6xx came out.

The GTX 660 will probably knock down the prices a little bit. It was smart marketing tactics by releasing the high end cards first.

The GTX580 is rated for safe operating at up to 97C on Nvidia's website. You never want to see a card get that hot but the point is it's not an emergency. I don't like to see any card go above 85C personally as higher temps do shorten the lifespanm of the card and that is what GTX570s with stock fans hit even with a slot between them on my previous SLI of the cards under heavy load. As long as your 580 is staying under 85C don't worry about it.

I believe the only reason the 670/680 were priced as they are is due to the meager gains (for the price) on the competing 7000 series. Those were supposed to be the mid-range GTX600 series cards with the GK110 cards coming out this fall due only to poor 28nm production, but when Nvidia seen the competition they decided to make a killing with the 670 while undercutting launch prices of the 7970 drastically whilst saving GK110 for the GTX700 series in 2013. That's what I gather from keeping up on all the news that was presented during the pre-680 launch at least.

I have a feeling that the 670's in SLI will be what the 460 gtx sli was in terms of bang for your buck come the next generation. Right now a 670 sli is near indistinguishable from a 680 sli at substantially less price. So wait for the 700's and buy 670 sli is my opinion unless something revolutionary comes along.

I guess I was just worried that even with a GTX 580 I wont be able to max out graphics settings and it would get laggy when there were full unit battles. But I saw a thread on this fourm about how it's a core problem and no graphics card can help with that.

i wouldn't recommend SLI, especially if the temperatures of one 580 is making you worry already! putting in more than one card really increases the overall heat inside the case, and you're going to have to deal with graphical anomalies or flickering here and there whenever a new game decides they don't like your SLI setup. i'm STILL getting black tiles with Civ 5 only when SLI is enabled. (which NVIDIA fixed sometime ago but then it resurfaced in a later driver)

    wait for GK110.

And then you have people like me where SLI works perfectly 95% of the time. Hell a couple issues I thought were SLI issues on my old system are really just "issues" being I still have them using a single 680GTX.

I came a mouse click away from buying 2 670's for an SLI set up but then rationality took over and I realized I'm not playing much lately.
