    Default Custom Settlements

So CA is gonna make some custom settlements, which are oriented on how those cities actually looked 2000 years ago.
I was wondering which cities you could possibly recreate and how many have to be generic. Its a lot of work to do custom settlements and i think they could do about 5-10.

So you can vote now which settlements you would like to see most. You can choose how many options you want to pick. I guess 10 would be a realistic choice. BTW what do you think will you be able to mod custom settlements? that would be awesome since we got those battle map editor... i dunno if its possible.

You can find some videos about recreations of ancient cities in this [url=http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=552809]thread[url]
Especially interesting would be those cities which have the 7 ancient wonders of the world Great Pyramid of Giza, Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Statue of Zeus at Olympia, Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, Colossus of Rhodes, Lighthouse of Alexandria.

Give me a sec to create the poll

Remember Carthage in the first pictures we got? That was a custom settlement (They also confirmed it somewhere else).

Anyone have a quote for that? Not doubting, but I just figured that was made for the preview as a lot of the buildings look generic and it doesn't look really anything like carthage (at least from the recreations I've seen).

conflicts take place over much bigger environments - much of Carthage has been recreated in the demo. To accommodate this extra scale, the game now features a top-down tactical map.
From The Norseman who has compiled everything we know about Rome 2 in his stickied thread.

as many as possible. They don't all need to have entirely unique buildings, but their disposition and their geographic features should be modelled: e.g. imagine byzantium/constantinople, with waterfront on three sides with only one land access point, etc.

So, basically, the emphasis should be absolutely on the strategic differences between cities: visual differences are secondary.

Anyone consider the possibility that the Carthage we saw in those screenshots is just for a historical battle amd doesn't mean that we'll have custom settlements?

that would be stupid, why would they make a detailed city just for a historical battle that not many people play. it would be absurd not to put it in the campaign.

This will probably be how they will be implemented.

Because in the campaign you have upgrades and it will be hard to allow upgrades while also trying to keep the settlements true to history. They will probably have generic upgrades, but who knows?

That just seems like the guy fluffing up his article. I wouldn't get your hopes up on custom settlements just yet until its confirmed by CA. Obviously more than just carthage will have a port attached to it, that one just looks too generic to me to really say that they are going for a full recreation of carthage, but I could be wrong.

Well, Carthage has a circular port (which I believe was used by the navy)
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

This is supposed to be a diagram of ancient carthage. You can clearly see the circular port in the bottom left, and there is also a statue at the top of the photo.

This is an in-game photo, where you can see that same circular port on the right, along with that same statue at the top of the hill.

Plus CA has stated that they are actual photos from a battle set in Carthage

I think the main city up there that i want CA to hold nothing back on would be Athens. Roman people have written in some sources that the emperor that sacked the city (i think it might be Trajan?) was so stunned by its Beauty that he build a arch and a library and a forum in the city.

So according the ancient sources Athens was a huge Roman/Greek cultured city after the Roman invasion of Greece.

Also i dont see many votes for Deplhi, That was the holy city of ancient greek culture, with the oracle and the great temple of Apollo and many others. Greek kings from all over Greece went to Delphi to consult the ORacle about war, or whatever problems they had.

Well we dont have much information but as far as i remember i read it somewhere that they plan to do some custom settlements. That was the whole unique selling proposition of the trailer they showed to journalists.
We got Carthage, which is a huge city that looks (at least) similar to how it actually was and this makes it able to combine land and sea battles.
Because if you have normal settlements like in the past, theres not even water around, so how would you be able to combine it if its not designed to fit such a scenario.

Also it would be incredibly stupid to use those custom settlements only in skirmishes and historical battles. Its not such a big deal to just use it on the campaign.
Since mods like Third Age Total war were able to make awesome custom settlements on the medieval 2 engine like minas tirith, helms deep, isengard, minas morgul, i thought CA would step it up a little too.

Yea, no way CA would be that awesome, but just a little bit awesome

EDIT: Im gonna reinstall medieval II now and pay third age
