Default Do you want the General RPG leveling up from Shogun 2 to return?

From the EAGLE STANDARD thread posted today:
Control of historical generals, with RPG-attributes a'la Shogun II.
Personally, I don't like this. Why?
Because I want my general to develop based on the situations he goes through... Not by assigning his skills myself.
It gives them a lot of character... and is also way more exciting and unpredictable.

Being the omnipotent controller of the game I am I would like to be the "god" of the game and control everything that goes on with my generals.

    I think you're just an emperor/ruler.

Agree. If I want to play an RPG, I play an RPG.

i would prefer to upgrade ala rpg elements i found this very fun combine this with traits from roma surrectum and your on to a winner. generals become much more personal to me when im control of their development. its nasty yet extremely hair raising to lose a very well developed general in a epic fight.

i tend to use my generals in actual fights on the field of battle. i dont want my sons of mars to be 'roman poofs'

Not only do I want the RPG leveling for the General to return, I want it to be applied to units as well, or armies. Something needs to be done to bring more attachment to units and characters and more investment. General RPG leveling I found to be a great catalyst for this.

I can't vote on this poll, since i kinda want both, i want to assign skill points, so i can groom my general, or give me a edge in mulitiplayer campaigns, but at the same time, some things should be out of hands, picking up traits that can negate or enhance given skills, depending on situations, such as losing battles to often, suffering wounds, dislike the cold etc

I find it hard to get attached to a general when I can make 10 like him down the line.

This is what makes all of you RPG lovers arguments worth nothing. Why? Because TW is not an RPG and you don't have 1 general and 1 army, you have lots of them. And with a RPG system you will always choose the best that suits you and you will end up using always the same things and you will have clone generals and armies (trait wise). It's nice to be able to influence what group of traits and retainers are to be given, but not choose exactly what. Let the unpredictable (meaning the situation based trait system) be the final decider of how my generals (and how it seems, armies too in Rome 2) is going to develop himself.
The poll should have at least another option of choice, so I didn't voted.

Um.. you realize I'm against the RPG elements, right?
And for the exact same reasons you mentioned.

Well if they made it so, skills points is a way of grooming your general in a craft only, and other factors should make up the other part, postive or negative traits that can help build a personality, so they won't all be exactly the same. I understand shogun, you pretty much choose everything yourself and assign your own followers, so i hope, they can allow a bit of customization while leaving somthing to the situation the General find himself in, kinda like, "learn on the job" thing. If you prepare fortification often, you should get a bonus after time for doing so, or somthing, or - 1 to attacking battles, to show over caution. Which can all depend on what sort of personality the General is adopting.

    Agreed.

If he has for example participated in many siege battles he should be given " engineer " skill +1 , +2 , +3, etc.. Depending on how often he has done that.

No I think this system is too superficial.

I would prefer the same system of recruitment present in NTW for general extend to every agent and a system of education for your family member.

Otherwise I would prefer if my action have more influence over the trait my general gain.
As an example if I launch successfully an ambush with one general he would gain the trait "good ambusher". I don't want him to be good at ambush simply because I decide it.
This way a battle with a general without experiment would have more tension.

I'd rather see some type of 'feat' system whereby you acheive feats based on your actions. i.e. win 5 defensive battles you earn 'skilled defender' (+1 defense) or if you sack a city you earn 'pillager' that reduces enemy morale in a seige or something like that.

Basically like Medieval 2 but a bit more transparent and maybe with some way to focus on a specific aspect i.e. Governer, Field Commander, Naval Commander

I would prefer a mix of Shogun 2's skill tree with Medieval 2's trait system. I liked the addition control you got over your general's development in Shogun 2, but I actually found myself missing the crazy trait system of Medieval 2. Maybe not quite as silly as Medieval 2 - like how easy it was to mess up your generals by building the Brothel chain - but maybe a nice mix.

It doesn't exactly fit with Rome, does it? The whole point of the RPG-esque leveling in Shogun 2 was to demonstrate some "larger-than-life" perception of various generals/Daimyo.

I think some of it was due to Shogun 2's smaller timescale too. I think the longest the campaign stretches is around like, 40 years? Maybe?

Or perhaps they just wanted things to be less chaotic. The trait systems were neat, but sometimes you could easily get a bunch of garbage generals that weren't good at anything, or you could have ones that had oddly conflicting traits (like how can a Roman general "Hate Blood" and get Bloody anyway?)

Yes, but someone mentioned something about education to your generals and things like that that could influence you general and it made me think that before a general comes of age, you could influence his basic traits by "selecting" what should he study more with a chance to get 1 of a list of traits. After he comes of age, he should be in the hands of destiny (which is you) and the battles (or not) that await him. So, I think a new modified trait system might work, but with less influence from you, much less.
