    Default The Official Linux Thread....

As I finally got my Installation of Ubuntu working, I was instantly amazed at how great it is compared to Microsoft Windows XP. It seems much more stable, it is definetly quicker, and it is addicting. For some reason, it makes you want to fiddle with it more, build it to your needs.

I've been downloading some Linux software now, things such as a better Media Player etc. I was wondering, any other Linux users out their among us? Your thoughts? Opinions?

    I love it

i would be happy to share any opinions of mine, just would like to know where you got it from and if the dl is free before i am in any position to decide an opinion.

also do you need an emulator or virtual machine to play windows only games?

Well, you can DL the latest version of Ubuntu onto a CD, and boot it from the CD, and then install it from their. Alternatively (as I did) you can order CD's and DVD-Rom's from Ubuntu absolutely free of charge, both ways. I ordered 8 CD's, 2 DVD's and 2 Mac compatible versions.

If you use emulators like Wine (which will significantly decrease performance) you can run windows games. I have A dual-Boot Operating system though, so if I need windows, on Start-up I can go to it.

i'm still trying to DL some more plugins though, so my files, mostly .Mp3's, work correctly.

    To get Wine:
    sudo apt-get-install wine

    To run a Windows app:
(You may need) chmod +x filename.exe
    wine filename.exe

I love it because it seems so stable, i'm just having problems right now getting .mp3 files to work, it's a hassle and trying to figure out some file extensions can be hard as well. Still though, it has enough +'s to be worth the switch, atleast the non-games switch.

I take it you are using linux with the GUI? My past experiance with linux GUI's have not been nice, but the last one I really used was mandrake 8. I tend to stick to the command line nowadays, but thats because there is no use for a GUI in the server environment. Linux is increadibly stable, but to its credit, my windows box usually stays up for around 2 weeks before reboot is needed. I have a fedora 5 box at home, was planning on turning it into a webserver, but I have to wait until I move in 2 weeks, as right now the extra load blows the breaker in my room.

I installed it in the GUI interface, and i've run some programs in command-line or GUI interface. Ubuntu seems to work fine, i'm just not used to some file types and stuff like that, I need some time to warm up to it I suppose

how does Ubuntu cover updates, do they use YUM, RPM or some inhouse update tool? as far as redhat goes, YUM is far superior to RPM, as it will automatically track down dependancies. The last time I had to install an RPM package, I had to install 4 other packages just to satisfy the dependancy requirements.

Blag http://www.blagblagblag.org/ is the free linux one should go for if filesharing, instant messenging, burning, ripping, and flawlessly enjoying all kinds of mediafiles are what you wish from another os than windows. Windows games like the totalwar series can be run/emulated in either wine (comes w most linux distros) or cedega sometimes eaven faster than in Windows. Cedega http://www.transgaming.com/ can be found via different filesharing sources or subscribed to for a mere 5 dollars a month.

Another gamers linux is the pclinux supergamer os http://www.tuxmachines.org/node/6136 its a dig dvd download but comes packed w lots of good game titles, and is very windows like. Its also a good free base for linux gaming.

Ubuntu is also good but not really the most beginner friendly, w ubuntu you eaven get the dvd for free and and are relieved af all the download hassle.

Hmmm I'm having some installation problems. What program and settings did you use when burned the .iso onto the CD? I'm using CDBurnerXP 3. I've got the CD set to be a class 1 iso bootable disk and I closed it so as to not allow any further writing. What did I do wrong?

I just opened the ISO image with WinRar then copy'd it's files onto the CD, and burned it with the tool that came with Window$.

Linux almost made me stab someone today, I was hammering away at a PHP/MYSQL issue today, and for the life of me couldnt get YUM to work properly. Turns out there was no DNS specified, I wish it told me that in the first place.

I'm running the 64-bit version of Ubuntu now. It really like it, I downloaded a automatix and easy ubuntu autoscripts and they installed my drivers, multimedia codecs, and a lot of useful programs like swift fox (optmized firefox for 64-bit systems), VLC media player, real player, etc... Right now I'm having trouble with getting it to recognize my floppy but I've posted on the Ubuntu forums so I'm sure someone will help me out soon, they have a really great community there.

Anyone managed to find a good music player? That is what stopped me cold when I last used Linux.
